Don’t expect many Supernatural season 13 love interests

Will there be some Supernatural season 13 love interests coming in the near future? It’s a fair question. Yet, we also love how much of the show is the complete opposite of The CW in terms of following some of its tropes. It’s not the most romantic show out there, and nor does it really try to be. Maybe you get a love interest who lasts longer than episode or two once in a blue moon, but that’s really it. The vast majority of the time you see the show drift away from that and focus more on some other things like family, friendship, and of course kicking demon butt up and down the street.

In explaining more of this decision, show executive producer Andrew Dabb told TVLine the following:

“I don’t think this is that show, honestly … Neither of them is looking for love, let’s put it that way. Sam has been in love multiple times, and Dean has had his own relationships… There was a time when Sam and Dean, and particularly Sam at one point, thought they could have a normal life and walk away from the fight. I don’t think either of our guys look at it that way anymore. They know they’re going to fight until they can’t fight anymore, either until they win or they die. When you’re committed to that fight, the idea of bringing someone into that and being like, ‘Hey, let’s get married’ [doesn’t compute]. I’m not sure either of our guys is really looking for that at this point in time.”

We do like much of what Dabb is saying here considerably, if for no other reason than that it shows an accuracy towards what his show is and also the realism of the brothers’ situation — it does feel weird to talk about where they are and “realism,” but that’s where we are. We do remember the Sam/Amelia storyline especially as a prime example of Sam looking to escape this life and felt like it was very effective in retrospect — we know it wasn’t super-popular at the time but we feel like it played out the way it should. Had that actually worked out, what would we have to write about here at CarterMatt? Probably not all that much since Supernatural wouldn’t be the same show if Sam wasn’t out hunting demons.

With age comes maturity, and at this point the Winchesters know that they can’t have something all that serious romantically. If they did, they would be forcing the women they love to realize that they’re putting their lives on the line every time they took a case. Who is going to be willing to put up with that?

What do you think could be coming for Sam and Dean on Supernatural season 13 moving forward, and do you think it’ll ever be appropriate for the two to have a love interest? Share below.
