American Idol 16: Katy Perry, Luke Bryan on new judging panel

Luke Bryan

After weeks of rumors and speculation, the new American Idol panel is finally official: Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie.

Now, you can take advantage of a chance to see some of what they have to say. We recently posted some of the first thoughts from Richie about getting the role, and he seems more than a little excited to get to work. Below, you can also now see what Perry, Bryan, and returning host Ryan Seacrest all have to say. It’s interesting that they’re going to all work together extensively in the months coming up, but at the same time the four parties probably haven’t spent all that much time together yet. They may know each other on some level through either awards shows or maybe even the rumor mill for this season (or of course through Ryan and his radio show), but this is a very different environment. They need to all have a good rapport together since otherwise we run the risk of reprising the great Mariah Carey – Nicki Minaj mess of a season from a few years back.

Just in case you were wondering as to win the three parties are going to be making their first appearance together, the answer to that is simple: Good Morning America! If you watch the new episode this coming Wednesday you’ll get a chance to see all three talking about the show for the first time before some of the judges’ auditions actually begin taping.

Do we think that the new season of the show will be a hit? We have some confidence thanks to the panel, and what many fail to realize is that at the time the show went off the air over on Fox it was actually averaging a decent rating of more than a 2.1 in the 18-49 demographic. The only reason that it didn’t get more attention was because it was so expensive to make … and we’re not altogether sure that issue has been rectified with the hire of Perry for $25 million. Salaries for the other judges were not disclosed, but in between paying these two plus Seacrest we have a feeling that this was not a cheap panel to put together.

What do you think about Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie as a panel?
