The Last Ship season 6 renewal unlikely; Eric Dane looking at other projects

Eric Dane

While we love The Last Shipsigns are pointing more and more to the Eric Dane series coming to a close after the upcoming fifth season.

According to a new report coming in right now from Deadline, Dane has already been approached about doing another TV project, and while he turned that offer down he has been made available to do other TV gigs in the future. Typically, this is a sign in advance that a show is coming to a close. Meanwhile, the site also notes that there is no cliffhanger at the end of the fifth season, which means there’s a certain expectation from the production arm that the end could be near. It’s starting to become all the more clear now why there was so much recent discussion about season 5 (airing next summer) being the last.

So if this is likely the case, why not go ahead and announce it? We do think that there is a certain degree of patience on the part of TNT, as they probably do want to figure out before they do anything else if the ratings suddenly spike in another direction. The unfortunate news there is that we don’t quite see it given that the show is so far into its run at this point, and there is even more competition coming on the air Sunday. The ratings have been down for most of the summer, but it’s not as though TNT did the show a whole lot of favors when you think about it being scheduled against everything from the NFL to Game of Thrones to Ray Donovan to at one point the Emmys. There have also been some weather situations that have made it all the more difficult for fans to watch live. We personally think that the network should’ve just paired the show up with Claws and created more of a lineup for itself rather than putting this show on the air in such a difficult time.

If The Last Ship season 5 does end up being the end for the series, there are two things that we’re hoping:

1. Chandler and the Nathan James get some sort of worthy send-off after this long journey.

2. Eric Dane and the rest of the cast get some other great opportunities. If they are free to pursue other work, the good news there is that they’ll have plenty of time to go out there for pilot season and see if there are some other jobs for them.

Do you think The Last Ship season 5 should be the last for the show?
