Moving into The Orville episode 5, Seth MacFarlane is clearly doing what he can to get more viewers on board the show. Casting Charlize Theron, his former co-star and an Oscar-winning actress, seems to be another very smart way in which he can bring the show to the next level. This effectively guarantees that there are going to be some more opportunities to draw eyeballs to the show, and it also gives it someone to be a fun foil to MacFarlane’s main character of Ed. Given his past relationship with Kelly, there could also be some awkwardness that goes along with that.

The Orville episode 5 synopsis – “After the crew saves a stranded ship and its attractive captain (guest star Charlize Theron), Ed becomes smitten with the Orville’s new guest, while Kelly suspects all is not what it seems. Meanwhile, Gordon attempts to teach Isaac the art of pulling off a practical joke.”
We do certainly think as though the timing was right here for The Orville to have a big-name guest star given that we’re entering what could be a rough patch for it ratings-wise. Its numbers plummeted in its first airing on Thursday night, and this is a show that needs to consistently keep its ratings at a decent level. We have to imagine that cultivating an outer-space drama is not cheap, and Fox already has a history when it comes to canceling science fiction shows despite what the general public may think of them. If Theron brings in even ten or fifteen percent more viewers than we saw previously, that may be enough to get us excited about the show’s future. We know that this is a series that does like its format of doing standalone episodes, but we do also wonder if there’s going to be a chance for her to come back down the road. If this is a major success story, we have to think that it’s possible.
