Outlander season 3 episode 4 photos: Richard Rankin, Sophie Skelton, and Hannah James

For today’s Outlander season 3 episode 4 photo preview, we’re shifting the focus slightly away from Jamie and Claire Fraser and onto the supporting cast. After all, there are so many people who play a role in this epic love story, both positively and negatively, that you cannot possibly ignore them!

When it comes to Roger and Brianna, their role in helping Claire is very much positive — and they do eventually have a love story in their own right. This photo above shows Richard Rankin and Sophie Skelton’s characters back in Scotland together (and on the road — sort of), and our initial reaction is mostly just that it’s nice to see the two enjoying each other’s company! It’s also just nice to have Rankin back on the show, given that the last time we saw him was back during the season 2 finale “Dragonfly in Amber.” (Skelton made a brief appearance in episode 3.) His role in this episode, along with that of Brianna, is to assist Claire in her journey of making it back to the past. She now realizes that Jamie survived the Battle of Culloden, and this offers her up a second chance at a life with him. The primary challenge here is simply finding a way for her to locate him even in the event she goes back; Jamie did a good job of staying hidden throughout parts of his life (that’s what being Red Jamie will do to you!), and tracking him down is no easy task. The last thing she wants is to go back, fail at finding him, and then be without any touchstone in her life. That’s a tragic an ending as you will get.

Fans of the book series already know how this search for Jamie ends, though many TV fans may realize the same thing given that the epic Print Shop reunion scene is coming in due time.

We’ve loved Rankin ever since seeing him on The Crimson Field, so it shouldn’t come as all that great of a shock that we’re intrigued in seeing what he brings to the show regardless of however many episodes that he’s in this season.

The arrival of Geneva

Below, you can see two different photos, with the first being Jamie (Sam Heughan) in his new role of groomsman at Helwater Estate. That just so happens to also be where he meets for the first time Geneva, played by Mercy Street actress Hannah James. She’s set to have an impact on his life … and that is just about everything that we can say at the moment without venturing into book spoilers. We do like the costuming for these photos very much since it does give you a larger sense of aristocracy. It’s also a nice contrast for Jamie to the prison / Red Jamie clothes he’s been wearing for much of the story to date this year. He doesn’t have to be in hiding or in jail anymore!
