Hawaii Five-0 season 8 spoilers: The real aftermath of McGarrett’s radiation reveal

McGarrett's radiation

For everyone wondering how McGarrett’s radiation exposure is going to play a part in Hawaii Five-0 season 8, the bad news is that it is a big component to the over all story (and how could it not be?). However, the good news is that there are no plans to kill him off on the show. The talk about Alex O’Loughlin potentially leaving the show after season 8 probably perpetuates that idea, but we don’t think Alex leaving is a sure thing and we certainly don’t think the show wants to depress anyone by burying one of its most beloved characters since this is a show that is mostly about fun and family. Killing off Steve immediately in the aftermath of Grace Park and Daniel Dae Kim leaving the show would be even more cruel, and we don’t think that Peter Lenkov or anyone else at the CBS show is a mustache-twirling super-villain who is out to leave fans sobbing into mountains of tissues.

Instead, Lenkov notes to Entertainment Weekly that what McGarrett’s radiation reveal truly allows for some different avenues for the character to be explored, including him deciding to take on the idea of the restaurant with Danny a little more seriously:

“Everybody assumed we were killing him off and it was like the last season, which was absolutely not on anybody’s mind … Clearly it shows that he’s mortal, and it’s going to affect his legacy of what he wants to do post-being a cop. Danny had talked about opening that restaurant, that’s going to be a part of the arc this season of them deciding whether that’s a real viable option for the two of them, to maybe have a retirement game plan in mind down the road.”

Basically, think of this storyline for McGarrett as planning towards a happy end as opposed to it just being the end itself. The last thing that we want to see with Steve is him being in a position where his storyline ends in a way that leaves everyone with a heavy heart when so much of this show is geared towards fun and family. It makes so much more sense for them to start working towards something new and allowing a potential ending to come organically out of that. Hopefully there are several more seasons of Hawaii Five-0 to come, but when the show does end we feel that it will find a way to end naturally.

We know that the writers are not waiting very long to start introducing the storyline of Steve and Danny’s restaurant. As you can see over at the link here, it could be explored this season as early as in the show’s second episode.
