Blindspot season 3 spoilers: Why Luke Mitchell’s Roman is the new Big Bad
As a matter of fact, Roman is going to be responsible for Jane’s glowing tattoos, one of the big reveals at the end of last season. Speaking about that subject to TVLine, show executive producer Martin Gero passed along the following message:
“It would be fair to guess that Roman is behind it, but it’s not about Sandstorm. It’s not about taking over the American government. It’s a whole new thing now … [Luke Mitchell] is a series regular this year. He’s in every episode. He’s our main bad guy, and first and foremost, he’s really hurt. Jane is the closest person to him in the world, and she chose Weller and the FBI over him. He’s been hurting about that. This isn’t the only reason for the tattoos, but there’s certainly a punitive part of the tattoos where he’s trying to imprison Jane by them in many ways.”
Basically, what makes the idea of Luke Mitchell’s Roman as a central villain so compelling is that he is carrying with him such a strong burden and a powerful personal reason to want to cause her harm. It’s different from some of the other characters we’ve seen on the show who are acting with their own personal motives. Roman may have his own reasoning as well, but this is more deeply personal for him than it is most other people Jane has gone up against. The lengths that he will go to ensure he gets what he wants from Jane will be a central part of the story, and it could create some interesting stories as we move along over the course of season 3. This is going to be a pivotal year for the show in many ways: It’s on a new night in Fridays, and it will need to stand out in order to cement its legacy more than it has to date. Here’s to hoping that the folks over at NBC find a way to give the show the best promotion, and that Roman stands out as a villain in every way we imagine that he will.
