Riverdale spin-off featuring Sabrina already in development at The CW
Sources confirm that the network is looking at bringing The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, a different sort of adaptation of the Archie Comics property. You’ve seen the character on TV before in Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, but this is a different version and hopefully one that will prove exciting to many people out there. Per a statement released by the network the new show “re-imagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft. Tonally in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, this adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.”
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, (the showrunner for Riverdale) is already on board to write the pilot script, so we have high hopes for this show. There’s obviously a lot of work to be done here to get this show off the ground, and CarterMatt is figuring that in the new year we’re going to have more of a chance to learn about casting and all of that good stuff. We would assume that the new show would be planted within Riverdale, but one of the big questions that goes along with that is mostly whether or not we’re going to have a chance to see Sabrina act in such a way that goes against the tone of the original show. To date, Riverdale has not been a program to dabble in the supernatural, so to do anything at this point would be a huge turnaround for the show. Nonetheless it is something that we anticipate being necessary in the event that The CW wants to really capture that character’s essence. Maybe the producers will make this fairly similar in a way to Pretty Little Liars and its previous spin-off Ravenswood, where those two shows were a part of each others’ worlds, but kept some of their tone and supernatural themes separate from one another. There was actual consideration at one point to bringing some undead/supernatural themes to Riverdale given the popular Afterlife with Archie comics that are out there.
For now, our advice is to remember that a Sabrina show is coming down the line, but also remember for a moment that there is still a great show for you to enjoy in the present! Riverdale is going to premiere later this fall, and this time around it’s going to be in a new timeslot Wednesday nights at 8:00 p.m. Eastern. We’ll have more news before long.
