How the Sean Spicer – Emmys 2017 cameo came together

Sean Spicer - Emmys

Even though it may be polarizing, the Sean Spicer – Emmys 2017 cameo at the start of the show was considered to be one of the night’s big surprises. The former White House Press Secretary was brought out, complete with podium, to discuss the crowd size at the event. It was a clear reference to Spicer having to go out and brag about the crowd size at Donald Trump’s Presidential inauguration, which drew more headlines thanks to his interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live! this past week.

We’ll give credit to Spicer for being able to make fun of himself, even with an awareness that there is some significant criticism out there claiming that CBS effectively “normalized” someone with close ties to the Trump Administration by bringing him out and telling a joke or two at his own expense.

What we want to focus on primarily within this article is how the entire event came together in the first place, especially since keeping the cameo a secret was no easy task. Per Entertainment Weekly, Spicer rehearsed behind the scenes so that nobody would learn about him being in attendance; there was also a good bit of timing involved behind the scenes so that he wasn’t spotted by an abundance of people backstage before going on. Spicer got his moment in the sun, and then did what many other people often tend to do after awards shows: Hit up the after-parties. While at one, he did speak briefly to the aforementioned publication about what he is up to now and also what it was like doing the gig this year:

“Life outside of the White House has been shockingly enjoyable … everyone has been very gracious [at the Emmys, even though] it’s not exactly a Republican crowd.”

So what’s next for Spicer? Our feeling is that he’ll probably take a bunch of paid speaking engagements, possibly cameo on Saturday Night Live in the future, and then fade a little more into the background. There were rumors at one point about him being a part of this season of Dancing with the Stars, but nothing ever materialized there and we’re not sure the two parties would’ve worked out a deal even if there was more mutual interest than what there ended up being.

Did you like the Sean Spicer – Emmys cameo?
