The Blacklist season 5 video: James Spader, Megan Boone detail new season
In the new video below courtesy of NBC, you can see Boone, Spader, Harry Lennix, and Ryan Eggold all opening up about what could be an intriguing, dramatic, and at times even fun season of the show. The fourth season got extremely dark at times, but we’re now getting set to see a lightening of the tone and an opportunity to see both Reddington and Liz like never before.
For one, we’re going to see a different sort of Liz than ever before! As Boone says in the video, she’s bought in more to the idea that doing things outside the lines is not necessarily terrible. There is some room to roam around when you’re operating in a covert operation or doing things to help her father rebuild his criminal empire. This is one of her goals for the season, mostly because she realizes that Reddington with power is a way to help catch other criminals. The fact that he’s her father also probably plays a role in that. She seems freer now that the news is out there, though she does also note that there is another secret — the contents of the suitcase — that could be a problem down the line. Tom Keen currently has that in his position, and that is something that will be a big part of his story during the early going this season.
Beyond just the family dynamics and the new mission statement, what really surprises us about this new video is just how funny it is. The show seems to be willing to use a little more slapstick here and there, and it also produces some pretty great visuals including Reddington staying at a seedy motel and Liz doing what she can to get him out of this position. He realizes that he’s down, but he doesn’t seem all that interested in panicking on it. It actually feels a little bit more like he’s okay being in this spot given that he realizes just how his life has gone as of late. He is okay to have a little bit more of a break before getting immersed in the craziness once more.
This season has great villains, new mysteries, returning characters, and of course some surprises around every corner. It also of course has its great cast, who will be great vessels for telling this story.
