America’s Got Talent finalist spotlight: How Mandy Harvey can win

For the second straight year, we are here to kick off one of our favorite article series: The America’s Got Talent finalist spotlights. There are ten people now in the running for the grand prize, but only one of them can win. Can any of them, including Mandy Harvey. take home the grand prize? You can debate that if you’d like in the comments, but we’re assuming within this series that they can.

Today, we at CarterMatt are going to look more extensively at the deaf singer, the recipient of Simon Cowell’s Golden Buzzer, and a woman who has this effortless ability to communicate and share her heart. Her lack of hearing is just one part of her, but we love that it doesn’t define her. We feel like we’ve come to learn a good bit about how she perceives the world through her performances, and she carries with her a lot of light and effervescence. She also has an incredible voice.

Her strengths – Amazing range and relatability in the way that she signs. There are going to be some comparisons to Adele, but she has a sense of performance that is very much her own. There’s nobody really like her, and that does help her stand out even with there being so many singers on this season. She’s unassuming and has a great deal of humility. She seems ultimately like the sort of person America would want to vote for, and record labels would want to work with because she has a good sense of who she is.

What do she need to watch out for? – For Mandy, what she really needs from America’s Got Talent at this point is a package that shows more of her day-to-day life and some of her end goals. We do get her look at the world and her philosophy, but we do want to see her shaped as a person beyond just her being deaf. We’d be a fool to act as though story plays zero role in how people voting, and the producers could do her a favor and expand her presentation on the show. This isn’t something that she needs to watch out for per se; the problem in describing that is that she hasn’t really done a whole lot this season that gives us pause.

How she wins – If she can figure out a way to move people like she did with “Release Me” earlier this week, she’s got a really good shot. She’s a great singer, but if she brings people into her world and also allows them to relate to her music, she’s golden. We’d say right now that she, Darci Lynne, and Preacher Lawson are the three frontrunners this season; depending on what happens Tuesday night, anything is possible.
