Hawaii Five-0 season 8 debate: Should Catherine Rollins return?
Now, let’s get back to the question at hand: Is the time right for another Catherine appearance? So far, it doesn’t feel like she’s going to be coming back any time soon on season 8. There hasn’t been any discussion of that subject, and we feel as though if there was some chatter about it from the writers that it would’ve been brought up before now. There may not be an immediate need for the character, given that Steve McGarrett has romantically moved on for now, and there are already some talks about him maybe exploring something coming up with Alicia Brown.
Could there be an opportunity to explore further “closure” between Steve and Catherine? Sure, but there also comes another question with that: How much closure does someone need? You also don’t always get that in real life and Hawaii Five-0, while fantastical in their action sequences, does a great job at tackling real life issues in a very relatable way. We do think that it is important that she comes back at some point because her value to the show long-term is enormous, but we also don’t think that there should be a timetable on it. With there being new series regulars coming on board plus a larger role for existing characters, there is a lot going on here as it is. Trying to throw her into the mix at the moment could end up making the show a little too overwhelming at a time when things are in flux.
As for when we could end up seeing Catherine stop by the show, we do have a few different suggestions:
1. The finale – Maybe there’s a case where her specific expertise could be of use, and she finds a way to come back and help out. If Steve feels like progressing to another level with someone else, this could be a good time to see her again and throw that wrench back into the mix.
2. A milestone episode down the road – Anytime that you can celebrate the show’s long-term legacy, it makes sense then to bring back people like Borth and Masi Oka. We obviously want to say Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park here too, but we don’t foresee them coming back in the immediate future.
3. Completely by surprise – We do think that there is something to the show just bringing the character in completely out of the blue, and not telling anyone that it’s happening in advance. If you are seeing her in the future, we wonder if there’s a way the show could do it without anyone knowing? It would be challenging given that fans know where to look for cast members in Hawaii, but it could be interesting.
Do you think that Catherine Rollins should return to Hawaii Five-0 in the near future? Share in the comments!

I would like to see the writers bring her back and be able to drain the hate some people carry of her character or her person. I do believe that if they played it right that some of the bitterness would go away. Think about a story line of why she left . The look on her face as she was in the car leaving Steve. She did not want to go and that was very real. If the writers played that she was being blackmailed. She left to save Steve from somebody or somethings. What if Steve got a call saying Catherine was in prison being beaten and near death. Do you not think he would not go save her. What a storyline. That could play it that way for several episodes. Then give them the time to rediscover their hidden feelings for each other during her recovery. They are soul mates and with maturity on both of their parts and the love they have for each other it could make a great season with a little drama here and there. All women like a love story along with a lot of action. Steve has got to be human. He has a problem with women I think because of what he experienced throughout his life with his mom. That needs to be explored in the show so he can feel again. I get the feeling that there are some out there that does not like the idea of another gender in Steve’s life. We sure don’t need to go down that road. Please please don’t. Talk about kill the show. Some of the doctored pictures of Steve and Danny together that I have seen here and there are disgusting. They are dear friends and that’s it! They need to stop adding people to the show just for the sake of adding. They have Tani and Junior which fit in just fine. They have Danny and his family to stir in the pot. Add the fact that it’s time to add To it that it’s time to add a storyline of a personal life for Steve, that’s enough to fill in and soften all the action that goes on as the main theme of the show. Ok. I’ve taken up enough space today. Hope the writers take a little idea from my story line and make it happen.

And the show isn’t already broken? I can’t keep track of all the new faces. It’s overflowing with characters……… Like a ahow with ADD. The original cast of Steve, Danny, Chin, Kono and Catherine was when the show was at it’s best. Now it feels like all these people throw together and nothing clicks. I’d like to see Cath and Steve reunite and in May, say goodnite to Five 0. It’s had a good run but it’s now like the Good Wife was. Time to pull the plug before the show goes down the tubes.

Yes Catherine should def come back, fav character by far and the best fit for Steve. Agree that she could have handled things better in S6 (although feel this is the writers messing with the character), however Steve is not blameless and needs own that.

Yes, absolutely. Not only are Catherine and Steve a great couple, beautiful to look at but they also share the same selfless beliefs to put their own needs aside for others’ happiness. For the haters who used to complain about Catherine not being part of the Ohana, well, what do they have to say now that Chin Ho and Kono have flown the coop? The new cast are unknown and they’re no more Ohana to Five-0 than I am. :-/

Yes have Catherine, Michelle Borth return for several episodes. Not just finale! I think that’s dumb one episode. Back with Steve, they were a good couple, is my first choice. However, if not with Steve she is strong character to stand on her own and makes arc for this show better not worse as some feel. Especially, I don’t know how women turn on women so quickly. Just plain jealousy!! I do believe that the love story with Steve/Cath has more to be written and I believe it needs to be addressed properly and everyone quit hating on her and let the storyline be played out as intended. I watch 6.03 all the time and from what I see, more is to be told with them and why she left. No more Grace on show for us women to show how strong women can be and as for the new person, well I never heard of her, not that she is not a good actress. However, I already identified with Catherine character and grew to love her over 7 seasons. Just unfortunate that the people who run this show don’t even know what they have in Michelle Borth and the Catherine character. Really sad! I am gonna start watching Supergirl that’s the only show that is giving women any lead rolls or props on TV today, just plain sad! However, of course, always going to continue to watch Law and Order, the ladies on there always bring it!

So much truth in women be jealous. MB is a great asset to Hawaii 5 and belongs with Steve’s character. They keep trying others but it just doesn’t work. Let’s just roll with the tide of people that want her back in Steves life. I think if we take a honest poll you’ll find many more that want her return than those with so much hate.

No, never. There is no need. I don’t keep seeing my exes repeatedly for closure after closure. I’m so tired of this wound being reopened and no, it is not realistic.

Not realistic to continue as It has been but to return for Cat and Steve to meand the hurt and realize there was wrong on both sides and continue the love story and let it grow. Yes yes yes

Yes bring back MB as Catherine and before finale. She can be in finale too but she need to have more SL than oops she in episode finale. Up she just pops and no SL lead up to her return is utterly dumb. She can be in finale if you saying she gonna have a leading roll nxt season other than that bring her back much sooner!!

The show’s had enough drama without adding the whole Catherine issue back in the mix. The early seasons where she showed up now and then were good, but as soon as she started down the ‘Doris’ road it was trouble. Alex may not write the scripts, but surely at this point, input on his character should be respected……..and he does not see a reunion or them getting back together. If she shows up again I really hope they allow Steve to stay true to his character.

Yes bring Michelle Borth back she is great and her character Catherine is so strong for women. Love her character and the storyline of independent woman, men don’t like that about women but we make up more than 1/2 this world live with it!

I would love Catherine returns, I’m absolutely convince that her story hasn’t been told, the show is not the same without her, the chemistry Michelle and Alex has con the screen hasn’t been seen again since she left

Can we just not? Like Catherine or not (and I’m firmly in the camp of ‘not’– they utterly ruined her and her presence on the show takes away from the main cast members), can we not reward an actress who actively attacked and stalked members of fandom by giving her more work?

I hate what the writers did to her. She was such a great character, probably second only to Steve for me. She was perfect for Steve because she understood him. However, after the way she left Steve in S6 I can totally see her critics point of view.
I’m pretty certain Catherine will make an appearance again this season. Unfortunately for Michelle, the majority of her fans only seem to want to see her return to Steve, and that’s just not possible now IMHO.
I’d be happy to see her return though. Steve holds no grudges so why should the fans of the show?

The EP has already said repeatedly that Catherine’s story with McGarrett isn’t over yet, that he’s not looking at that as “over,” that she’ll return, that she’s part of the show until it goes off the air and that she’s part of the entire arc of the franchise. It’s not a matter of if, but when. Steve and Catherine left things on good terms in 7.07. So, it’s totally possible for Catherine to return to Steve in the future. They have a clean slate now. But to get there, we’ve got through all this convoluted and contrived Lynn crap, as well as PL’s teases about Steve and Alicia.
On another note, I hate how people act like Steve is a victim here. Yes, Catherine hurt him and could have handled things better with the way she left in 6.03. But, he’s made some mistakes in their relationship over the years as well. This isn’t just on her. I love McGarrett – the REAL McGarrett, not who he’s been the past two seasons – but die-hard McG fans seem to completely ignore that he’s not blameless here whatsoever.

Thank you. I agree I want her to return as she and Steve are a very strong couple and I find her character to be a strong, believable, fierce female. Despite the hurt, Steve revealed he still has feelings for her in their last interaction. I don’t think her actions in the past were really all that consistent with the woman who had such a long relationship with Steve. The two of them were so in sync with one another, it made no sense for her to be able to pull one over on him about why she was leaving. As well, a man who had been in a relationship with her for so long (i mean, they had been living together at one point) should have had the guts to propose no matter what she was supposedly doing. He let her get away one time, if he really cared then he should have put himself out there and let his feelings be known. He was supposed to think she didn’t feel fulfilled; he should have given her a reason to stay. Just a bunch of mess made with here departure. No matter what Alex has said, when two people care about each other and have had the relationship these two have had, they can decide to do the work necessary to heal the hurts. That is what love and commitment does. Steve would be throwing a lot away to not fight for this. His continued brushes with death should motivate him to step up.

I suppose you can spin the events to fit any opinion, but the sad fact is this character generates nothing but friction and hostility among the fans. That is not a good thng.

Unfortunately, or maybe, fortunately, writers can do whatever they want. Fiction frequently doesn’t follow my logic! We all should not worry and just enjoy Steve.

Absolutely. The Lynn arc doesn’t work and never has she has way overstayed her welcome. That needs to be wrapped up already. She’s a horribly written character, who the real McGarrett would never be interested in. They’re complete opposites with nothing in common. It’s manufactured drama forced down the viewer’s throats to cater to a section of fandom who hates any woman Steve or Danny get involved with. The only reason they like her is because they know she’s completely irrelevant. She not only embarrasses McGarrett’s character, but she completely ruins him. Yet, they hate a woman who actually fits McGarrett’s character – Catherine. McGarrett would be better off with Alicia.
And, before anyone tries to say that Alex said there was closure in 7.07. He doesn’t write the show, and the EP has repeatedly said otherwise. Lynn needs to go. And, they need to get back to writing the real McGarrett instead of this juvenile, low-brow, forced and contrived McGarrett to cater to teenagers who’ve never had a boyfriend.

I would love to see Catherine Rollins come back to Hawaii 5-0. Catherine is perfect for Steve and if this is the last season it would be good to see Steve have her back. She’s fearless, smart and beautiful and not like the vacuous beauty Steve’s been dating recently.
