Veep season 7 will be series last, Julia Louis-Dreyfus confirms
Alas, it appears that Selina Meyer’s glorious term on TV is coming to a close — Veep season 7 will be the last and in a time when we are all in need of a few good laughs, this is really a shame.
This news came out today via The Hollywood Reporter, as show star Julia Louis-Dreyfus revealed that the show has simply run its course:
“It became clear that this season should be the last season … We don’t want to repeat ourselves or wear out our welcome. The story has a finality to it that feels end-of-series.”
Meanwhile, showrunner David Mandel echoed many of these thoughts with some comments of his own:
“It was just a very natural thing … We don’t want to repeat ourselves or be boring. It’s bittersweet, but it’s right.”
Ultimately, it’s always better to see showrunners and performers decide that they are ready to end the show as opposed to beating it into the ground until it becomes unfunny. This is a show that has had a really fantastic run on HBO, including countless Emmy nominations and a chance to tell some brilliant, topical humor that at times has hit close to home over the past year. This is a show that has shown (arguably better than any other one out there) just how ridiculous being in politics truly is, given that it’s mostly a culture of power-hungry leeches and then a few people who are genuinely interested in doing good and making positive changes.
Of course, we do imagine that Louis-Dreyfus is going to continue to have some other big hits after this; she insisted to THR that she loves working and as no plans to retire and for that we have to give Julia a big CarterMatt thank you since she is one of the funniest women on TV. For HBO, one thing that does feel clear is that the next year or so is going to be a pretty big blow to them — after all, they are going to be losing Veep as well as Game of Thrones, which is planning to wrap up its run after the upcoming final season either next year or in early 2018.
The final season of Veep is slated to premiere at some point next spring or summer, and it will start filming a little bit later this fall. We know that Selina Meyer isn’t currently holding an office, but she claims that she is considering a run again. As a result of that, we’re going to be getting a chance to see the political process all over again — think in terms of some terrible campaign moments and possibly even a run against Jonah Ryan, a man so crazy that he just might find a way to win.
