American Horror Story’s Sarah Paulson, Ryan Murphy team for Netflix’s Ratched

Sarah Paulson

Well, consider this to be one of the bigger non-shockers of the year: Sarah Paulson and Ryan Murphy continue to be joined at the hip! This time around, it is coming in the form of Ratched, a new drama series airing over at Netflix that will allow her to play a younger version of Nurse Ratched from the famous One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. On the surface, this feels already like it is going to be Murphy’s version of Bates Motel, and of course he has his signature star at the center of it.

According to a report from Deadline, Netflix had to make a pretty big commitment to the show in order to land it. To be specific, we’re speaking to the tune of a two-season renewal valued at around 18 episodes overall. That’s a lot considering that no one knows if the show will be a hit or not. Some other providers that were in consideration for the series included Hulu and even Apple, who must have thought that bringing the show on board would be a great way to ensure that they raised their profile when it comes to original programming. Everyone wants to play in this pool these days.

As for how in the world Murphy is going to manage to balance out all of the different projects that he’s got on the go at the moment, that really is the million-dollar question. Remember that he already has American Horror Story, American Crime Story, and also Feud. All of these properties seem to be thriving, and it’s all due to that Murphy magic he seems to have. For the record, we don’t think that starring in Ratched really means that Paulson is going to be unable to take part in the other projects. We know that she’s got the talent to pull off multiple roles at roughly the same time, and somehow she also finds a way to make everything work. One of the most remarkable things that she’s ever done, at least from our vantage point, is find a way to do both The People v. OJ Simpson and American Horror Story: Hotel at around roughly the same time.

Odds are, this new project is still a ways away; don’t expect to see Ratched on Netflix until at least the end of 2018 or 2019, given that there is so much early work still to be done. The rest of the cast isn’t set but what we do know is that Murphy will direct the first episode.

If you haven’t seen it just yet, remember that you can view the preview for the second American Horror Story: Cult episode just by heading over to the link here. If it turns out anything like the previews suggest, we could be in for some mass insanity for the rest of the season. (Photo: FX.)
