America’s Got Talent results preview: Are Darci Lynne, Preacher Lawson locks?

America's Got Talent results

As we near the America’s Got Talent results show tonight, it’s becoming increasingly clear who the favorites are to make it to the finale. With that, it’s also becoming clear that there are a couple of people who likely are falling short. While we’d say that everyone performing last night was talented, this was a good night for variety acts and a so-so night at best for some of the singers. We could have a little more parity than we anticipated going into the final round!

Now, let’s start to break down (as we do every week here at CarterMatt) where some of the results are likely going to fall.

Locks to Return – We consider Darci Lynne and Preacher Lawson not only finalists, but also top three finalists. Darci is the faraway favorite to win the whole season — she’s got a chance to be hugely successful in Las Vegas — but Preacher should also have a really big career. Not only is he incredibly funny, but he’s got a worldview that would yield itself well to some sort of comedy series. You can probably go ahead and lock in Chase Goehring, as well.

Beyond these three, we do think that there is a good bit of variance elsewhere.

Likely gone – Johnny Manuel took a big risk in performing an original song on the show last night, but it just didn’t work for him because it wasn’t a good enough song. There wasn’t enough of a melody there in order to match the talent that he has. Yoli Mayor actually gave her best performance of the season, but she performed at the start of the night (which is always a tough spot) and we figure that there will be viewers who forget about her.

On the bubble – The Dunkin’ Save is still around, and there are only five acts of the eleven returning overall. Basically, this means that of the remaining group (Greater Works Choir, Mike Yung, Evie Clair, Billy & Emily, Eric Jones, and Sara & Hero), only two are going to advance to the final round.

If we had to pick from this group, we’d likely hand it to Sara & Hero and Eric Jones since they were both very good last night and could bring something different to the finale. With that said, we think America will probably side with Mike Yung, who performed at the end of the show, and then maybe Sara & Hero after that based on some past results on the show. What we don’t want to see happen is Evie and Mike making it through, which would mean that we’d have three singers, a comedian, and a ventriloquist who sings in the final round. If Evie falls into contention for the Dunkin’ Save, the other acts should watch out since her story is a big sell for viewers thinking in the moment.
