Game of Thrones season 8: Don’t expect another Ed Sheeran cameo

Ed Sheeran

Game of Thrones season 8 is going to be bringing many things to the table, but apparently one thing that you are not going to see is another Ed Sheeran cameo. After that ill-fated appearance earlier this season alongside the other Lannister soldiers, it seems like the singer is going to have to think out loud somewhere else.

Speaking to MTV News in a new interview, Sheeran confirmed his absence from the series moving forward, but made it clear that (more than likely) his character probably didn’t make it through alive after all that transpired:

“We were all quite young, those soldiers … I doubt I’m going to survive for that long, to be honest, when there are dragons in the world … No one wants to see me come back. I wanted to be a cameo in it, and I’ve done the cameo. I’m cool with it, though. I enjoyed it.”

The funniest thing about the Ed Sheeran – Game of Thrones cameo is that if the majority of the fans out there were asked to turn up on the show, they’d do this in a heartbeat (including a slew of celebrities!). Yet, because it was Ed Sheeran and it was an easy person to hate on, he became a lightning rod for what was one of the most useless scenes in the seventh season. He wasn’t terrible as a performer in his scene, but it was just strange and a rare moment of light and laughter in what was otherwise a fast-paced, crazy season that really accelerated the story along through the final six episodes premiering next summer.

The ultimate lesson here is that shows like Game of Thrones do not need cameos at all. Just allow the show to do some of what it does best and avoid throwing in random celebrities – it’s just detracts from everything else that’s going on. Obviously, this is not a show that needs that sort of attention given that it continues to bring the drama and the intensity from everywhere else. Remember for a moment that the cliffhanger involved an ICE DRAGON DESTROYING THE ONLY WALL PROTECTING THAT ENTIRE WORLD. Seriously, that deserves to be in all capital letters since it’s one of the craziest things that we’ve seen on TV in a long time.

The good news for Sheeran

He’s got no real reason to be upset about a bunch of Game of Thrones fans being upset with him given that he does remain one of the most-popular performers in music today. He can just look at his record sales and roll around in his piles of money any time he’s down about the Game of Thrones fandom giving him a hard time.
