Dancing with the Stars: Terrell Owens appearing alongside Cheryl Burke

Terrell Owens

Get your popcorn ready: Terrell Owens is officially appearing on Dancing with the Stars season 25.

In the Good Morning America video below, you can see the notorious former wide receiver (who really should be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame by now, by the way) be confirmed as the second official Star of season 25. Drew Scott of Property Brothers fame is the only other person who’s been officially announced as of right now, though other names are floating around out there including Nikki Bella and Drew & Vanessa Lachey. Terrell will be working with Cheryl Burke, which is interesting given her former collaboration with Emmitt Smith. Both are very famous NFL icons, and both played for the Dallas Cowboys.

What Owens brings to the table here is a real sense of showmanship. This is a guy who, (through most of his NFL career) really understood that a big part of the league was entertainment. He danced around, was incredibly cocky at times, but also worked harder than most. He was the sort of player who would go out of his way to catch any pass, even if it meant taking some big hits along the way. There aren’t many other wide receivers in history that were as productive as he was for the period of time that he played.

On the flip side, the biggest issue that we foresee Owens having on the show is trying to find that consistent audience. He wasn’t always known for being the most cooperative player in the NFL, and he also played on so many different teams that we’re not sure a single franchise really claimed ownership of him. If you look at some other winners, you’ve got people like Smith and Hines Ward who were really pushed towards the win thanks to a team’s following. The model that he really should follow now is Rashad Jennings, given that he wasn’t the most well-known football player, but he still managed to get the job done using a lot of charisma and fun on the dance floor. Luckily, these are two things that we know Owens has in spades. He loves to have a good time in front of a crowd, and we think this is a much better fit for him than his previous reality TV experience on The Celebrity Apprentice — here, it’s much more about performing than trying to impress some individual person with your business acumen (otherwise known in this sphere as winning some mundane tasks with an arbitrary set of rules that in the end mean nothing).

Do you think that Terrell Owens is the right fit for Dancing with the Stars 25?
