Criminal Minds season 13 episode 5: Aisha Tyler directing
In a new post on Twitter, series co-executive producer/writer Karen Maser confirmed the great news with a photo (see below). In some separate tweets, we’ve seen the episode number that she’s going to be directing confirmed as well (episode 5!). This will be Tyler’s first episode in the role of director on the show, though she recently made her feature-film directorial debut with Axis. This is a great opportunity for Tyler to further show what she brings to the table, though we’ve got a feeling at this point that fans know she can do just about anything. She’s been a host, an improv expert, an actress, a voiceover artist, and a billion or so other things over the course of her career. This is just another fun credit to have on her resume. Tyler is the only active female cast member to have directed an episode of the show; we’ve seen Kirsten Vangsness become more involved as a writer behind the scenes for the show as of late.
One of the great things about being part of the Criminal Minds family is that it does allow for these sort of opportunities to stretch yourself beyond just performing. After all, both Matthew Gray Gubler and Joe Mantegna have become regular parts of the directing rotation for the show, and Thomas Gibson also directed many episodes when he was a part of the cast. We have to imagine that if Tyler wants to direct more episodes beyond this, the opportunity will be afforded to her. Typically, cast members can direct one or two episodes a season. (It’s a little hard schedule-wise to do more than that.)
One of the great things about Tyler getting to direct an episode around this time of the season is that it’s probably going to air around Halloween. While we don’t consider Criminal Minds a horror show by any means, there are probably going to be plenty of opportunities for her to freak people out if she wants that. This is a show that does excel, at bringing us number of freaky UnSubs who are more than capable of scaring the heck out of us. and we already know that one of the shows scarier UnSubs from the earlier seasons is going to be coming back to terrorize everyone once again – Jamie Kennedy’s Floyd Feylinn (you can read more about his return at the link here).
