Animal Kingdom season 2 finale: The uncertainly of Scott Speedman’s Baz

Scott Speedman leaving

The season 2 finale of Animal Kingdom on TNT created many big, shocking moments, but one question will carry on: Is Scott Speedman leaving?

Alas, we’re probably not going to know that answer until season 3 premieres next summer, and the message from series star Ellen Barkin on Twitter (see below) doesn’t do a great job offering you up a whole lot of information one way or another.

There are, of course, a number of questions that we could touch on here, including Pope’s future to Lucy’s betrayal to the mystery person who actually shot Baz after it looked like he was going to die earlier in the episode. For the time being, though, let’s just focus on the fact that the guy got shot in the first place.

We of course cannot say that Baz is completely innocent in anything, so he’s not the easiest guy in the world to sympathize with. Yet, one of the things that Animal Kingdom excels at is painting pictures of flawed people and finding ways to create different dimensions to them. This is what they were so effective with here. You may not like Baz, but you probably still feel for him on some level after Lucy up and left him.

Could Speedman leave?

Absolutely, given that crazier things have happened on these sort of shows and killing off main characters is essential in order to ensure that the story progresses. However, remember that many cliffhangers have somehow led to characters surviving even against all odds! Baz could find a way to pull through, and given what we saw tonight it’d be a little more interesting to see him make it through. What will he do with Lucy and Marco as a result of what they did? Was Lucy complicit in this all along, or did she take the money and take off because she saw an opportunity to do so? How involved were some of the other main characters?

The thing about this family is that there are suspects all across the board, and it’s easy to imagine any one of them either doing something terrible or hiring someone else to do something terrible.

If we had to assess the future of Speedman on Animal Kingdom right now, we’d say that he will be back for the third season. Yet, there’s SO much time that this could change even if it’s set in stone right now! It’s a fun little carrot to dangle around over the next few months, that’s for sure.

When could Animal Kingdom season 3 premiere?

This is another fun discussion worth having, and we’re sure that you will also be asking that question after the finale tonight! For the time being, you can read up about that over at the link here.
