The Voice season 13 promo sends Adam Levine, Miley Cyrus to the 70’s
Within this video, you can see the likes of Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Miley Cyrus, and series newcomer (at least to America) Jennifer Hudson in a wide array of different costumes as they driver around in a car and fight some crime. Miley’s got some action movies, Adam’s got a wig, and at one point Jennifer looks as though she is about to start belting out some lines from Dreamgirls.
The high point of this entire preview, at least from our vantage point, is whatever in the world we are seeing Blake Shelton wearing. At one point, he actually looks a little bit like Nick Offerman.
You can argue that this preview, fun as it is, does reinforce slightly what the problem with The Voice is: It’s never about the contestants, and it’s almost always about the coaches. Even in the latter rounds, much of it is about whether or not this coach will defeat that coach, when in reality the singers are the ones doing about 90% of the legwork. The coaches are involved more than cynical people would think, but they can’t go on stage during the live shows and direct how something goes.
Ultimately, your enjoyment of this show comes down to whether or not you accept that this is just more entertainment than a singing competition, or one designed to actually find a star. If you do that and hope that maybe you discover a new favorite singer or two for yourself, it’s worthwhile to get into the show. We’ve felt that way about past seasons. The best ones are the ones that just make you smile and where the coaches are clearly having a good time. (Remember some of the awkward Adam Levine – Christina Aguilera moments during the earlier seasons? We’re still trying to forget about them.)
If you watch the show for humor and lighthearted fun, these trailers deliver since you’re throwing the coaches outside of their element and giving them a chance to be goofy while expressing some sort of crazy metaphor for the work that they do on this show.
Remember that new episodes of The Voice are set to kick off next month, and at that point we’ll learn more about how this new panel relates to one another in terms of chemistry. We just hope that it’s by and large a good time — oh, and that the ratings stay stagnant after suffering some declines the past few years.

This year, for the first time since season 6, the Playoffs are not kicking off the live rounds and voting.
This season, the Top 12 will be chosen by the coaches.
