NCIS: Los Angeles season 9 spoilers: First Nia Long photo + details!

Nia Long

If you’re a diehard NCIS: Los Angeles fan, you may have learned the news already about Nia Long signing onto the show.

Long, fresh off of her role on Empire, is going to be starring here as Assistant Director Shay Mosley. She’s different than anyone else who has been with the team, and while that may cause some problems, we don’t think of her as an adversary for anyone by any means. After all, she’s got the same goals as everyone else and wants to see the team succeed. There are probably just going to be some bumps in the way during the journey.

In speaking a little bit more about this role to Entertainment Weekly (who also just so happened to share the new photo below), executive producer R. Scott Gemmill had the following to say:

“Nia fits perfectly as a strong woman with a distinctive point of view … We play her as a Washington insider who thinks our team, as good as they are, can do better. She’s here to see them reach their full potential… whether they want to or not.”

Some fans out there may be well aware already that the presence of Long is going to be significant when it comes to the relationship between Kensi and Deeks. As previously reported, we’re going to see Mosley do her part to get Deeks sent back over to the LAPD. She obviously has some issues when it comes to workplace relationships, and in general terms maybe she’s right that there are occasions in which it can be a distraction that keeps from getting the job done. Her problem is that she doesn’t know Deeks and Kensi yet, and when she does, she will most likely realize more in terms of their strength together. They’re one of the most effective crime-solving duos that the show has ever seen, and we are excited to see how all of this story plays out.

Here’s what you want from any new character on a long-running show: You want your core characters to benefit in some way by their presence, and in turn, you want the core characters to help this person at the same time. There’s a good opportunity for growth on all sides here, so we’ll have a chance to see more of how this story develops when NCIS: Los Angeles premieres on CBS this fall. One reminder is that you’re not going to be seeing the show in the same timeslot that you used to, as it’s now airing Sunday nights at 9:00 p.m. Eastern.
