Game of Thrones season 7 finale: The life & times of Littlefinger

Littlefinger

We anticipated that there was going to be a few epic twists on the Game of Thrones season 7 finale, but we did not see this one coming with Littlefinger.

This infamous man, otherwise known as Petyr Baelish, did everything that he could in order to convince Sansa Stark to turn on her sister Arya in Winterfell. He recognized what an enormous threat she was to his ability to continue to manipulate the situation, so he set her up to appear as though she was a traitor. This is a man who has gotten the wool over the eyes of so many people, and with that, we did think that Sansa was falling for his act. It was a rinse-and-repeat sort of feeling when it looked like his spell was working, and she was about to call in Arya to have her be killed.

Then, Sansa showed that she really has learned a LOT from her time with Littlefinger — she’s learned how to read him. Littlefinger made one too many shrewd moves. Now, he’s dead.

There were a number of people who were both integral and also critical to what we ended up seeing transpire here. For one, we did have a glorious moment in which Bran called him out for some of his misdeeds. Then, Petyr started to fall apart. He realized that he had no real recourse, and that everything that he had set up was falling apart. He never anticipated someone like the Three-Eyed Raven entering the fray with an endless pool of knowledge. Meanwhile, he didn’t anticipate Sansa being as intelligent as she was. Basically, she set up the entire situation so that Baelish had no escape plan. He is now gone, and with that, we have lost one of the show’s signature characters. It’s incredible to think about how important he is to the show and how long he’s been around.

At the moment, it’s more clear than ever that Game of Thrones is in severe herd-thinning mode sense there are only so many characters left on the show to make an impact. To think that there will probably be many more going the way of Baelish before the end … including some good guys. The heroes don’t always make it to the end, and that is something that any Game of Thrones fan is likely well aware of at the moment.
