America’s Got Talent: Analyzing Demian Aditya, Masqueraders’ eliminations

MasqueradersOn Wednesday night’s America’s Got Talent episode, we saw five contestants ultimately eliminated from the competition: Mirror Image, Pompeyo Family Dogs, The Masqueraders, Demian Aditya, and Brobots & Mandroidz. Some of these eliminations you probably saw coming going into the week, and some of the other ones have us completely stunned not just that they happened, but that they happened in a way that was very much bizarre.

Ultimately, the point of this article is not to shame any of the acts (many of them did do a great job), but instead to look for trends and better understand why some of these eliminations happened the way that they did.

Mirror Image – These two guys never really had much of a chance. They were invited into the finale mostly as a camp act that would be entertaining, but also be criticized by Simon Cowell. There’s one of these in almost every live show that is there to just add some more dynamics to the show and to keep things from becoming boring.

Brobots & Mandroidz – When you are a dance crew starting off the night on AGT, you have to be pretty exceptional. You also have to be fairly well-known. These guys didn’t get a lot of airtime or name recognition this season; even Just Jerk, another great crew who had more airtime and performed later in the show, couldn’t get through last week. Light Balance did, but they had another gimmick and also some Golden Buzzer appeal.

Pompeyo Family Dogs – This is the one that really shocked us. What happened? They performed late in the show and did a really entertaining act! The only thing that we can think of is that maybe viewers didn’t connect to the whole wild-animal theme, but we actually really enjoyed this and thought it was their most entertaining performance on the show to date.

Demian Aditya – This one stings the most, given that he’s the sort of act who often does make the semifinals or the finals. Unfortunately, he just suffered from a technical malfunction that wasn’t his fault. With some performers, you can overcome a mistake like that. His performance, on the other hand, really is reliant on things going off without a glitch. Even though there may have been a sympathy vote, there clearly was not enough of one.

The Masqueraders – There were probably just too many other singers for there to be room for another one, especially a group performing old-school music that doesn’t resonate well with younger audiences. Still, we give these guys some credit for almost making it through. They surpassed our expectations going into the live shows, but there was just too much of one thing on the show as a whole.
