The Night Shift season 4 ratings improve; SNL up; Zoo season 3 down
Let’s start things off here with a slice of good news: The Night Shift has improved from recent airings! Despite being hit yet again by some NFL preemptions, the NBC series jumped up to a 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic. It did still adjust down from its preliminary figures earlier in the day, but that’s pretty expected when you consider for a moment the NFL taking away some of its market share.
It’s still rather difficult to telegraph one way or another how the show’s going to fare in terms of a renewal, mostly because it’s A) coming from an outside studio and B) its numbers are down versus season 3, though that makes some sense when you consider what it’s up against.
For the record, though, we’re going to keep campaigning to get more of the show both now and also after the finale. Don’t give up hope, everyone!
The latest Zoo news
Unfortunately, we’re not feeling anywhere near as optimistic right now about the future of Zoo beyond the third season. This past episode drew, per the final adjustments, just a 0.4 rating in the demo. It also did suffer because of some NFL preemptions, but it’s in a little bit of a different situation than The Night Shift. It’s only averaging a 0.5 for the season, and with all of its action elements and CGI, it could very well be the more costly of the two shows. There is that Netflix deal bringing its chances back up a little bit (the streaming provider pays extra to get their episodes soon after the end of the season), but we don’t remember the last time that CBS renewed a show that was averaging around a 0.5 for a season. It’s certainly not something that they do often.
Ultimately, we really wish that this show and The Night Shift weren’t airing against each other — there are only so many live viewers in the summer, and we feel like the competition hurt these two shows on some level.
Was Weekend Update Summer Edition a hit?
We saw NBC give this Saturday Night Live spin-off a try this summer, and we absolutely do get why they wanted to give this a go. For the most part, we will say that it was a worthwhile risk. After all, it generated a 1.3 rating last night for an episode that featured an Alec Baldwin cameo. Here’s the one problem the show had: Timing it out to air during the NFL preseason. We feel like had we gotten this in July instead of August, it more than likely would have performed even better.
