Jane the Virgin season 4 could have smaller episode order

Jane the Virgin season 4

Is Jane the Virgin season 4 going to have a smaller episode order than some others in the past? Signs seem to suggest so.

According to a report coming in right now via SpoilerTV (which cites in terms some information from the CBS TV Studios press site), the episode order for the Gina Rodriguez series is being cut down to 17 episodes, which is down from the original estimation of 21 episodes. This would make the fourth season the shortest yet for the series. This is potentially sad for those who do love the show and want to see it stick around for as long as possible for the upcoming season, but we actually think that with the quality of the show first and foremost, this may actually be somewhat of a win.

Look at things in this sense: 20-22 episodes is a lot for any show, especially one with such a serialized structure. These episodes take a long time to make, and often doing this many means that there are a few that, at the end of the season, really don’t matter at all in retrospect. It’s probably easier to go with a shorter batch, since you can tell a story that is tighter and doesn’t include all that much in the way of filter. We personally wouldn’t mind of the show went down to 13-15 a season, provided that those episodes told a more concise story with less filler content sprinkled in along the way.

We wouldn’t say that a decreased episode order is a bad sign for the future of Jane the Virgin at all — instead, we’d argue that it has more to do with where The CW is at right now with their schedule. They’ve got a TON of shows given that they only program ten hours a week for the fall/winter/spring seasons. They need to find a way to fit everything in, and doing things this way probably allows them to launch a new season of a separate show in February or March that will still be over by the time that you get around to May or June.

Our advice if you love Jane the Virgin is the same as it would’ve been otherwise, regardless of what the schedule is: Watch the show live! This is the only way in order to properly guarantee that the show is brought back on the air. Otherwise, you run the risk of the show going away no matter how many episodes that it has. Just consider all of this food for thought as you think towards whatever the future for the series will be. New episodes will start airing later this fall, and we imagine more will be revealed about them in due time.
