The Bachelor: Nick Viall, Vanessa Grimaldi split; engagement over

Mrs. Carter: Nick Viall and Vanessa Grimaldi’s engagement couldn’t go the distance after their time together on The Bachelor.

Just over nine months after the two became officially engaged, and five months after the end of this past season on ABC, the two parties have now officially revealed that they are going their separate ways. They confirmed the news in a joint statement per E! on Friday morning:

“It’s with a great amount of heartbreak for the both us as we have decided to end our engagement … We gave this relationship our all and we are saddened that we did not get the fairytale ending we hoped for. We will continue to be there for each other no matter what. This hasn’t been an easy decision, however, as we part ways, we do so with lots of love and admiration for each other.”

These two have withstood some breakup rumors for a solid month or so now, and even before that there were questions about where the two would live and how their lives would fit with each other. Nick resides in Los Angeles, whereas Vanessa hails from Montreal, where she worked as a special education teacher prior to her time coming on the show. The two did have a passionate relationship, and we liked that they intellectually challenged each other in a way that some other couples do not. Unfortunately, the relationship itself couldn’t make it off the ground. They were honest the whole time about how they had issues that they needed to work through, and they never guaranteed that it would work in the end.

With this breakup, the track record of stars from The Bachelor actually finding long-term love with the women they chose continues to dim. Sean Lowe remains the only former lead to marry the person he gave the Final Rose to; Jason Mesnick originally chose Melissa Rycroft, but he is now married to his runner-up Molly. The Bachelorette has had a little bit more success courtesy of Ashley Hebert, Trista Sutter, and Desiree Hartsock. For some reason, the men on The Bachelor just struggle to make the relationships work. This is the second major breakup to have been announced over the past few months, as we also learned earlier this year that Ben Higgins and Lauren Bushnell were going their separate ways after more than a year together. (Read more about their split here.)

It’s sad when this sort of stuff happens; sure, there are many of us who are cynical and want to fire off an “I told you so” or two or three when an engagement in this franchise ends, but these are people’s real lives. We do want to root for them to find a way to have a happier ever after at the end of it. There’s no reason to be negative.
