The Fosters season 5 episode 7 review: Callie, Aaron’s big hour
For Callie and Aaron, it was the two of them realizing that it was okay being vulnerable and having a close relationship. They were able to enjoy just being together, and the moment at the waterfall was more crucial for the two than we can say. They learned to trust one another fully and implicitly, and we’re not sure that this is something that Callie has had with anyone over the years. She’s always had either a certain degree of fear or insecurity, but it was almost like that waterfall washed most of that away. This was a story about these two people, and we’ll see if they remain in the place that they were in here much longer. Aaron was essential to helping her come to a better understanding when it comes to her art project, and not let some of her classmates or the instructor intimidate her.
We wish that we could say that other relationships in this episode were anywhere near as stable, given that for Jude and Noah, they had one of their bigger arguments courtesy of Jude’s gaming channel getting in the way of the two spending time together. This may have been a petty conflict compared to others on the show, but it’s definitely one that we actually see happen in life often. Meanwhile, Mariana spent a good portion of this hour trying to help Logan get into a much better position with his girlfriend, which only pushed her even more into the friend zone. The whole Jesus – Emma “engagement” story was mostly pushed on the back burner in this episode, other than it getting a little bit of discussion time with Lena’s parents in town.
The Brandon – Cortney relationship may remain one of the show’s more interesting and complex ones, largely because he blew up over seeing her and Gabe kissing, which in turn convinced her that it was time to get a fresh start somewhere else. Brandon then seemed to try to make himself feel better about having feelings for Cortney by hiding it and heading over to see Grace with some of her favorite chocolate. It’s possible that Cortney is now out of the picture, but it’s also hard to ever really envision it since she hasn’t been out of the picture to date.
Overall take
The story with Lena’s parents doesn’t really do too much for us given that it seems too much like a regurgitation of the past. Despite whatever money problems the family has we have a hard time envisioning that they are going to lose the house, just like we have a hard time seeing anything terrible happening to said parents.
We think of “Chasing Waterfalls” more as a victory when it comes to not just the trials and tribulations of youth, but also relationships and understanding. This was a breakthrough hour for Callie, and in terms of her relationship with Aaron, it’s an hour that people are going to remember for a long time to come. Grade: A-.
