Is Shadowhunters season 2 episode 21 new tonight on Freeform?
Technically, this bad news is two-fold. First and foremost, there is no new episode airing tonight. Beyond that, the other thing to remember is that season 2 is over. There isn’t technically an episode 21 in existence this season, so there is no way for Freeform to even bring you one. Production for season 3 is going to be starting very soon, and the tweet below serves as your proof for that. Everyone in Toronto is getting set to dive back into work on new episodes, which is going to happen throughout the coming months leading up to the show’s premiere more than likely in early 2018. Structurally, everything is going to be the same as it was: You’re getting 20 episodes airing over the course of the year, and within those you’ll get some familiar twists and turns. It’s the same Shadowhunters you remember, but one that has evolved and will feature its own signature flavor.
While we do wish that there were more than 20 episodes in a season, we’re also still very much grateful to even have that many! You just have to remember that with all of the special effects and story that are crammed into these hours, it’s amazing that we have as many as we do. If you were to do more than this, there’s a good chance you would exhaust the entire cast right into the ground.
The biggest clue that you got of the season 3 story came in the closing seconds of season 2 with the introduction of Lilith. She is going to be extremely dangerous, and her ties to Jonathan give her a further sense of malice and of drive. It’s too early to tell how she will be manifested within the world of the show, but it’s probably going to give some people out there the chills.
Remember that there’s plenty of time for the show to announce some additional things in the months ahead — we figure that we’ll hear more about casting news and what some of the story plans are. By the end of the year, there may even be the first teaser out there for the return of the show! Freeform has to start marketing Shadowhunters before the holidays thanks largely to the period of time in which it starts airing. We’re excited to see what the writers will cook up, and we hope that you, simultaneously, will be around to enjoy more coverage.
