The Last Ship season 4 spoilers: Something terrible this way comes…

Last Ship

Just in case anyone was wondering, The Last Ship season 4 premiere seems to be very intent on stressing people out. By the end of it, there could be serious fears over the status of one fan-favorite character.

According to a report from TV Guide, the crew of the Nathan James — and possibly the larger Navy as a whole, finds themselves in a vulnerable place after an attack from an enemy blindsides them. Unfortunately, one person is going to be more worse for wear than the others as a result of this. He will technically be alive in the aftermath of the attack, but he’s going to need help even to move him to safety.

As a matter of fact, the report notes that by the end of the first hour, there’s going to be serious concern that this person isn’t going to make it. This is a show that has killed off major characters before, so is that fear that they could do so again … and this fear may be running through the second hour of the premiere.

So, who could the person near death be? there are obviously many candidates aboard the James, with the only major clue being that the character is a man. Also, it’s not Tom Chandler, given that what happens within this incident may in part be one of the reasons why he has decided to pick back up his work aboard the ship. This is an unfortunate way to be inspired, but sometimes you do have to take what you can get. (If you recall, Chandler at the end of this past season determined that he was not in the right place to lead, and as a result of that decided to depart to an unknown destination. In the season 4 premiere, you’ll learn that this destination ends up being Greece.

Another question beyond Chandler’s fate

Are the ratings going to deliver? We’re nervous about the return of the show for two different reasons. For one, It’s going to be premiering up against Game of Thrones. While the show has been in this position before, it’s never ideal. Beyond that, another issue at play here is the show airing later in the summer. Will some of the longtime fans even know that The Last Ship is even on in this new timeslot? It lost over 30% of its live+same-day audience in season 3 versus season 2, and we don’t want to see that fall even more this year.

The silver lining is obviously that The Last Ship has a season 5 renewal, so there’s no immediate reason to worry about it. Nonetheless, we do still like to play the long game here when thinking about the show and its future.
