Following the news of Philip Winchester joining Law & Order: SVU after his time on Chicago Justice, we now come bearing more great news. Brooke Shields is also now on board!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the iconic actress is going to play a major part in the upcoming story, though by and large, details are being kept under wraps. Shields had the following to say to the website, and it’s the only tease on the part we’ve got for the time being:

“I play a very different character from any I have ever played … I’m excited to stir the SVU pot a bit.”

Given everything that Shields has done, from movies to Suddenly Susan to her recent part on The Middle, there are a lot of different characters she’s played already. With that, we are excited to see what sort of stories that she helps to bring to the table.

One of the things that we’re already getting excited about when it comes to season 19 is that new showrunner Michael Chernuchin, to go along with Julie Martin and the rest of the team behind the scenes, is already doing a great job trying to give this batch of episodes its own identity. While so much of the SVU lifeblood is about the individual cases and watching them unfold, you also do want there to be some elements of the show that are very different year in and year out. Having some characters pop in here and there adds dimension to the show, and should challenge Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and the rest of the cast of main characters.

We could foresee Shields playing everyone from a tough-as-nails Defense Attorney to a victim of a high-profile case (even if most cases are typically resolved over one episode) to a political figure who takes a stand either for or against some of what the SVU team is fighting for. Given that this is Shields in the role, you figure it’s gotta be a meaty role and one that offers her a chance to clash with the other characters at some point.

New episodes of SVU will premiere this fall on NBC. The more some things change, the more others do stay the same. For example, the entire cast of series regulars from season 18 is coming back, and the show also is retaining the same Wednesday night timeslot at 9:00 p.m. Eastern that it’s had for much of its run. These are some things that the network seems more than happy to not shake up in the near future. It performs well here, and we figure that it’s well on the way to a season 20. (Fingers crossed!)
