FX confident about Sons of Anarchy spin-off Mayans MC
Just in case you were even remotely nervous about the proposed Sons of Anarchy spin-off Mayans MC, here are some reasons not to be.
Today, FX is wrapping the show with an appearance at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour, and while at the event network boss John Landgraf made it clear that the spin-off is making a great deal of progress — though we’re sure that many people were aware of that already. We know that they are recasting roles and reshooting a good bit of the series, but that’s the sort of thing that often does happen anytime you’ve got a property that has this much riding on its success. Previously, we’ve seen it with everything from The Big Bang Theory to Game of Thrones, and obviously those shows repeated the rewards in a rather substantial way.
In speaking on this further, Landgraf (per EW) had the following to say:
“I’m very confident of the future of the spin-off … The fact that almost the entire cast of the show is Latino is awesome. There are familiar faces and a lot of new actors we found.”
The decision for FX should be made at around the time we get to the end of the fall as to whether or not to greenlight the series. Beyond that, our assumption is that Mayans MC could air as early as fall 2018. It makes sense for the show to come on in the same timeslot that the original Sons of Anarchy did, so fingers crossed that there is some further insight on that moving into the future. Before that, though, let’s just cross our fingers that Mayans MC happens in the first place. With the massive audience that the original drew, we do remain very much confident that it’ll get picked up. While we don’t think that the network needs it in order to continue to be one of the best ones out there in cable, are you really going to be that averse to having it on the schedule? We don’t think so, given that if it works, it could be a tremendous ratings juggernaut for you.
As for what’s coming up already this fall, be prepared to see a new season of American Horror Story that is very much themed around cults. You’ve also got more of Legion, The Americans, and American Crime Story coming in the new year. There are also some early plans in place for another season of Feud themed around Prince Charles and Diana, but there is no specific premiere date or even window for it just yet. Our advice if you’re into those shows is to just be patient.
