Big Brother 19 episode 19 review: Things that go bump in the night

Big Brother 19 episode 19

When Josh won Head of Household on Big Brother 19 this past week, one of the things that he said was that he was going to be one of the craziest, most power-hungry people in the history of the game. As a result of that, it’s actually rather funny to see just how chill he was for most of Sunday’s episode. The only time he got heated was during a discussion with Elena, one where she was the person who actually did the bad job of the two.

Sure, everything that Elena was saying to Josh was true in that there was no reason for him to want to target her as a nominee if the rationale was being a “competitor.” Yet, the right thing to do in that situation is to state your case briefly, but if it doesn’t change, just take that knowledge and move forward with it. Understand that Josh’s statement effectively means that he doesn’t take you all that seriously as a player, and you should just use that information down the road when you’ve got more of the power. Playing this game is a big part about trying to be a great listener/communicator and understanding when to be quiet and when to speak up.

So Elena and Mark finished the episode on the block alongside Jessica, who lost what was one of the coolest competitions we’ve seen. We saw in here the whole house turned into the epicenter of all things spooky, complete with people trying to scare the various contestants. This led to some seriously great moments, including the following:

1. Cody acting the same as he does around everything, completely unfazed by some of the craziness.

2. Kevin doing incredibly well, telling us that this was nothing compared to the neighborhood in which he grew up.

3. Alex being incredibly effective, and coming within six seconds of overtaking Cody, who eventually won the challenge and was safe.

4. Raven actually saying in the Diary Room that she was a “professional ghost hunter.” Wait … seriously?

Overall, congrats to the show whenever they mix things up a little bit in the challenge department. This was more reminiscent to Big Brother: Over the Top than the flagship show, but that’s one of the great things that came out of that show: Great experimentation when it comes to some of the competitions and what we got a chance to see.

Does this show need a little more fun/silly antics here and there? Probably, but at least with this episode there was less in the way of depressing conflict and a little more strategy. It’s nice to see people like Josh and Christmas understanding more the need to play their own games, rather than just follow Paul around and parrot some of what he’s up to. Episode Grade: B.
