Just in case Maggie Sawyer was not awesome enough on Supergirl, know this: Her father is apparently Tony Almeida!
We now have confirmation that 24 alum Carlos Bernard is going to be playing the role of her father on the CW series, and is currently up in Vancouver shooting his storyline. Bernard announced the news of his appearance on the show days ago, but it’s been since that time we’ve started to get a little bit more in the way of insight that he is in fact her dad. Maggie’s made it clear on the show already that she has a difficult relationship with her parents, and they weren’t exactly approving of her being a lesbian. She was thrown out by her father when she was still really young, so we imagine that this could be very much a tense reunion.
Maybe the episode ahead will offer up more in the way of peace and understanding? We hope so, given mostly that Supergirl is a show that is positive in nature and one of the most appealing things about the Sanvers relationship is the inspirational quality to it. They’ve overcome many obstacles, and it’s certainly possible that she could also overcome this one to go along with it.
Sanvers fans in general should just celebrate that you’ll be seeing Floriana Lima in the early going this season, given that she is no longer a series regular and will be off doing some other things for much of the year. We’ve already heard that the show is trying to structure it so that the character remains a big part of the story, but we figure that there will be times in which that proves challenging. Balancing schedules alongside fan expectations is never easy, but we’re happy to see that the show is giving you some really good, meaty storytelling for the character almost right away in the third season. Based on where production should be at the moment (it’s been going on in some way for almost a month now), our feeling is that the producers are probably a couple of episodes into the run. The new season will premiere this fall on The CW.
What else are we excited to see?
For one, you have to put the Big Bad Reign at the top of the list! If you missed one of our recent pieces about it, be sure to head over to this link in order to understand more of what we want to see in terms of her costume.
In general, though, you gotta love getting Bernard on this show — a great actor and director who will get to play a very different role here. (Photo: The CW.)
