America’s Got Talent: Grace VanderWaal returning for first results show

Grace VanderWaal

The first results show for America’s Got Talent is airing in two weeks on August 16, and Grace VanderWaal is going to be back for it!

According to a new report coming in from Variety, the show’s reigning champ and skilled musician will be returning to the show for the first time since the Christmas Special, and she’s going to have all sorts of company in the form of three notable magic acts. You’re going to have season 9 winner Mat Franco, the first magician to win the show, and then also season 10 standout Piff the Magic Dragon to go along with season 11 performer Jon Dorenbos, who also of course makes headlines for playing for the Philadelphia Eagles. (It’s good that he’s coming back now, given that he’ll be unavailable later in the season.)

We don’t have to mince words when we discuss our reaction to this news: We’re thoroughly excited about this news. One of the things that AGT has done over the years was build a great farm system of performers, whether it be comedians, singers, variety acts, and of course magicians. We feel like that is especially true in the Howard Stern era, when the show did start to drift a little more from being all about singers and into some other acts that are super-successful. If you do look across the board, most of the strongest acts from the show are the ones that took their talents to Las Vegas and now have residencies there. Franco’s doing very well, but the same also goes for Piff and of course season 2 champ Terry Fator — one of the non-traditional singer winners who has made more money than the vast majority of reality competition winners out there.

Has AGT become a little more singer-heavy since Simon Cowell joined? Sure, but we do think that it’s also attracted a better array of singers than it did in the past. Beyond that, what makes Grace so notable in particular is that she’s a songwriter in addition to being a performer. The one comparison that we can make between her and someone from this season is Chase Goehring, who has super-creative songs and just got a Golden Buzzer from none other than DJ Khaled — not a bad person to get some praise from if you want to be relevant in the business. Apparently, Khaled wants to work with him in the future.

The timing of VanderWaal’s return to the show is perfect, so we’ll see what she ends up performing and what sort of impact that this has on her sales. She’s still incredibly young, and has the potential to have a very long career in this business.
