Outlander season 3: What’s next for the Brianna – Roger relationship?

Brianna - Roger

While we’ve discussed Outlander season 3 through the lens of Jamie and Claire often, why not focus now on the Brianna – Roger relationship? They are one of the more prominent pairings within the Diana Gabaldon source material, but it feels right now like we’re still going through the early phases of meeting them and understanding who they are as people within the show. After all, there really is only so much one can know about them when we’ve seen them in one extended episode (the fantastic “Dragonfly in Amber”) and that’s it. They’ll be around much more in season 3.

One other thing that you will see through the two parties’ actions and behaviors are some significant signs of feelings that are there for each other — however, there’s a difference between feelings and actions. They are working on this impossible task in bringing Claire and Jamie back together, and maybe their focus on that, coupled with their own awkwardness and potential fear regarding a relationship, will hold them back as a romantic couple. It may happen eventually, but don’t expect anything to surface between the two right away this season.

In discussing this subject further in a new interview with TV Guide while at the TCA Summer Press Tour this weekend, Sophie Skelton set up the relationship with the following quote:

“With Brianna and Roger, they don’t communicate very well even though they are the only people in the world who understand each other … There’s that beautiful infuriation. You just want them to sit down, tell each other how they feel and move the relationship forward that way.”

Here is the very-good news when it comes to the relationship between these two: Outlander fans are exceptionally patient. We’ve all learned to be over time after spending so long in the Droughtlander over the past year, let alone the wait that’s coming for Jamie and Claire to be together in season 3. (Read more about that over here; the two are not going to be together right away.)

The patience with Roger and Bree is merited further by the news that there is an Outlander season 4 already on deck, and if we have our way, there will be a season 5 not too long after that. Starz has made such a commitment to the series that there is an awareness among the producers that they don’t have to try to force everything in at one time. We’d say that once the epic romance between Jamie and Claire has stabilized more, you can start to emphasize further the epic romance that is here with these two. You don’t want to make the love stories feel commonplace, and establishing some sort of distance with them is one way to do that. True love should be rare, and should be something that you do have to work for. Even with people who are soulmates and meant to be together, it still doesn’t come all that easy. Everything will feel truly earned.
