While The Flash season 4 films, see Tom Felton’s message
Following the news of his departure earlier this week, the former Harry Potter star (who played CSI Julian Albert during his time on the series) shared a new photo on Instagram of himself alongside series star Grant Gustin. In the caption, he discussed how much he missed working with and being around his fellow co-star. Felton’s absence from the show was first tipped off by him being in Europe at the start of season 4 production, and then he was not present for San Diego Comic-Con last weekend despite being there the year before. That was the strongest sign that he was not going to be a major part in the story, at least in the early going. You never say never for the future, right?
As someone who thought Felton brought a great sense of humor and perspective to The Flash during his time there, we are going to miss him very much.
Yet, we do simultaneously feel as though the door is very much still open for him to return again down the road. He wasn’t killed off, and there are clearly some deep feelings that he has for Caitlin Snow/Killer Frost (Danielle Panabaker). Therefore, it wouldn’t be a shock to see him turn up later in the season to get some sort of update on him, and then from there to see more of him in the fifth season down the road (provided there is one, which seems likely).
One of the biggest problems that The Flash may have had entering this season is simply that there are so many different characters that it already needs to attend to, whether it be Barry, Iris, Caitlin, Cisco, whatever version of Wells turns up, Wally, The Thinker, The Mechanic, and a number of familiar faces we could see like Captain Cold, Jay Garrick, Gypsy, and Jesse Quick.
That’s one of the larger challenges for the DC – CW universe as they get further along in their run — the casts all start to expand out further, which in turn means fewer opportunities in order to see all of the people that you want to see. Even if Felton were to return, it’s not all that clear what sort of story there would have been for Julian. So much of his story was tied to the Philosopher’s Stone and then to Caitlin, and it’s not even clear just yet if the Caitlin we saw in the trailer is the same one who became Killer Frost. The team could’ve easily plucked this one, complete with cold gun, from another world.
