UnREAL season 4 renewal confirmed prior to season 3 premiere
The network confirmed the glorious news on Friday, which means that the show-within-a-show Everlasting will return alongside the colorful people who are responsible for making it. Hopefully this means more of Shiri Appleby and Constance Zimmer, who consistently give us some of the best performances for any drama out there — they make you laugh, but they also find a way to break your heart.
Given that the second season aired a year ago in the summer, we’re sure that there are many people out there who have wondered when the show is coming back. The third season will be coming your way in the new year — which, coincidence or not, happens to be around when The Bachelor airs. The irony there is that while The Bachelor will feature a male lead over on ABC, Everlasting/UnREAL is going to feature a season starring a woman (played by Caitlin Fitzgerald of Masters of Sex fame).
Per TVLine, Stacy Rukeyser will remain as the showrunner after being promoted to this position following the season 2 finale. UnREAL season 3 will air as a part of a lineup that also includes Mary Kills People, another super-creative drama and a part of a select group of scripted dramas that Lifetime has at the moment. Remember, UnREAL used to air in the summer alongside one of our favorites Devious Maids, but that show is no longer on the air.
Here’s to hoping that season 4 gives us plenty of behind-the-scenes drama, plus also some interesting characters and biting satire of what has become at times a manipulative reality TV machine. One thing that we do wonder is if the UnREAL writing team would consider a Bachelor in Paradise type format featuring many of their cast members from past seasons? This would be especially interesting (creatively) given that there are so many noteworthy characters from past seasons. Even though many of them were completely miserable being on Everlasting thanks to the humiliation they suffered, there’s still something innately fascinating that could be said here about their willingness to come back for another shot of fame. One of the things that could hold this idea back, for now, is that there may or may not be enough notable past contestants we’ve met on Everlasting, unless UnREAL just brought some on from seasons that were before Adam Cromwell entered the picture.
Obviously, Bachelor in Paradise has been the show in the headlines this summer, but for some rather unfortunate reasons that made us think for some time that it would be canceled. However, that ended up not being the case following an investigation, and it is going to return next month.
