Game of Thrones season 7 episode 3 photo: The Jon – Daenerys meeting teased
This meeting between Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke’s characters is so interesting for so many reasons, with the stakes for it being high on the list. These two parties are intimately aware of how important this meeting is, though it’s also important for them for other reasons (ie – they are related, but don’t know it yet).
With Jon, his priority for the meeting is rather simple: He wants to ensure that he gets Daenerys to pay attention to matters regarding The Night King in the north. Dragonglass is one of the only ways that they will be able to contend with the threat, and she is sitting on a trove of it in Dragonstone. If he wants to stop them, they have to work together.
For Daenerys, meanwhile, she wants him to “bend the knee,” and likely work with her further to conquer all of Westeros in a way that still unifies many of its people. (She doesn’t want to rule cities made of bones.) Given that Jon didn’t ask to be King of the North, we’re not sure he will mind swearing allegiance to her; we have a harder time thinking that he will cede his mission to what she has going on. His problem is this: Trying to convince others that what he’s seen and experienced is real since many out there still think of the night walkers as fables to scare your children with when they’ve been bad. It’s not until you’ve looked into the eyes of the Night King that you realize how dangerous a threat he is.
The one slice of good news that we can foresee here is that if anyone is going to understand the somewhat-unbelievable nature of supernatural occurrences in this world, it’s going to be a woman with dragons who has survived standing in fire. She could realize that his words are true, but still feel as though they need to remove Cersei and Euron Greyjoy from the equation before anything more is done. It’s hard to fight battles coming at you from both sides.
We’ve stated for a while that our theory was that season 7 would be about resolving the Iron Throne for the most part, while the final season would focus more on the White Walkers who are really the Big Bad more so than anyone else in the series. We’re curious to see if that comes to fruition, or if Game of Thrones chooses to keep the battle for the Throne going all the way close to the end.
