The Originals season 5 video: Is Older Hope perfect casting?

Older Hope

In the midst of all of the craziness associated with San Diego Comic-Con the past several days, we hadn’t discussed the new The Originals season 5 video … until now.

We’ve got that for you below, and it ultimately feels perfect to call this one both moving, fantastic, and nostalgic at the same time. There’s a good bit of this that we don’t need to go through in great depth, given that much of it by and large is a recap from events of the first four seasons. We’ve got the foundations of “Always and Forever” before we see things carried through to a moment where you wonder if that statement is even really true anymore. At the end of season 4, the first family of vampires saw their bond severed, and them sent off in a wide array of different directions. The union that they once had was now in tatters; it may have been necessary at the time, but that does not make it any less heartbreaking to think about now.

Then, we get to the new footage following the time jump, and our first look at older Hope (read more on her casting here). Danielle Rose Russell is playing the character, and we’ll say this: Superficially, she looks almost exactly what you would expect the child of Klaus and Hayley to look like. The show’s done a good job of finding a good person visually for the role, and we also like that the character appears to be a little bit more artsy and bohemian. She’s not like one of the teen characters within the world of The Vampire Diaries, and that’s important given that you don’t want to just watch the first season of that show with a few twists thrown in there.

Now, we just have to see if performance-wise she can match the excellent Summer Fontana.

This older Hope makes it clear that she does want to restore “Always and Forever,” and we hope that this means getting the Mikaelsons back together. Given that this is the final season that is coming (alas, it’s not coming until 2018), it’d be a little bit of a heartbreaker to go through this entire journey only to see at the tail end of it the main characters not together doing some of what they do best. The ideal final season of The Originals to us is getting the gang in one room, presenting a new Big Bad, and then just letting all of them go to town and be completely crazy. We know that it’d be entertaining, and it’d kick us in the feels with all of the various reunions.
