Looking at Outlander season 5 renewal timelines with airing schedule in mind
In a recent article, we briefly discussed that this is probably not something that is coming anytime soon. With Comic-Con dying down and with all of us starting to catch our breath a little, this feels like the right time to touch on that further.
Let’s start with some contextual timing: Outlander was renewed for two seasons in June 2016, in the days leading up to the episode “Je Suis Prest.” There were still many season 2 stories still to tell at that point, but clearly Starz had seen enough to be happy with giving the show a substantial future. We weren’t expecting a two-season renewal then, and we’re absolutely not expecting a two-season renewal anytime soon. Given that the show still hasn’t premiered season 3, there’s no need for them to order season 6. The best we can hope for is another one, which will keep the show two seasons ahead.
There is some merit in Starz choosing to announce an Outlander season 5 renewal by the end of the year. There may not be an immediate hurry, but for planning purposes, the earlier the announcement is made, the better that production can prepare. Work on season 4, after all, was beginning well before season 3 even finished filming. There was location scouting taking place in the spring, and it’s hardly like the writers show up in the room and begin their reading/research then. They need the time to think, comb over the Diana Gabaldon source material, and plan ahead.
In order for there to not be any delays and interruptions — important if the show wants to air annually in the fall — Outlander needs to have renewals for its future far earlier in advance than many other shows do. It’s very different than a network programming that can be renewed in the spring for the next season to premiere in the fall; everything is being filmed in advance of the premiere at the moment, things are shot at times out of order, and this show has a long and rigorous production cycle.
Do we think such a renewal will happen?
Absolutely, and we’re not just viewing things through rose-colored glasses. Outlander is one of the most successful series in the history of Starz, and it is a show that markets itself better than any other they’ve ever had thanks to its fans. It has star power at this point with Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan on the rise, and it’s also poised to get a significant ratings bump courtesy of its move to Sunday nights.
Starz also has a pattern of issuing early renewals to other shows — they also did this with Black Sails, another show with a lengthy production cycle, for many years. If they have confidence in their brand, they’ll make a public showcase of it.
At the latest, we envision a season 5 renewal happening in early 2018.

Black Sails was also the star for Starz and all of a sudden in the middle of season 4 Starz announced season 4 was the end. So far as I recall Starz hasn’t committed to more than 4 seasons of anything.
I love the books and especially Claire and Jamie but this season seemed like things were just skimmed over. They removed book story lines and characters and used crap from each episode’s writer. We lost the serial killer Rev Campbell to some silly fortune teller nonsense. And what a waste of time during the episode with the ship mutiny because someone didn’t touch a horse shoe for luck as they got on the ship.
Someone is killing Outlander and his initials are RDM.
Not expecting to see a season 5 if the show keeps on its artistic license course of not following the book. Makes me sad but will continue to watch hoping things will get back on course in season 4.

I am very hopeful that Stars will continue to renew Outlander through all the Outlander books. It is wonderful to finally have a visual of the books I have read for years. I am now re-reading the books and can hear Jamie and Claire talking while reading, a voice to my reading. The love that Jamie and Claire share is wonderful, giving a hope to endless love between two people. I love watching Outlander and watching Jamie and Claire through their various issues and the paths the story takes them.

So happy to hear that Outlander will continue.
After having read the books years ago, this is such a great series to see in living color.
And… Who doesn’t love “Jamie and Claire”?
The whole Outlander gang fast becomes like family!

i use firefox on my windows 7 pc to get onto aol. i don’t know what inputting is, but i highlighted & copied a segment of your article and posted it in quotes in my comment. typically that doesn’t present any problems. but all these sites have their own protocols, so who knows?

Trying seeing if there’s a “post as plain text” option. Sometimes formatting gets in the way here and there.

matt, i checked out the disqus site but found no way to to post that question. so i’ll just have to accept their current way of posting quotes from articles or paraphrase rather than quoting.
i have a question for you: do you know of any producer or other entertainment professional whom one might contact about scripts for consideration as film or tv production? this is not for me but for someone i know who has written several promising sci-fi scripts.
thanks.

There’s no one specific person, alas. Often writers/producers aren’t able to read any potential scripts, especially if they’re spec scripts for a show that they already work on since it presents a minefield of problems. My advice is to check out the Splitsider piece below that offers some advice on pilot scripts. I’m not well-versed in the area and I don’t want to send you down the right path.

Love the Outlander series. Would like to see it continue through each of the books. Best show I’ve seen. Can’t wait till new season starts.

I am a true fan of Outlander the Starz series and the books by DG. But I believe that all good things must come to an end. We love Jamie and Claire and after book 4 it gets a bit off on another adventure leaving the story of Jamie and Claire in the wind. I would be devastated if there was a season without Jamie Fraser.

Why would there be a season without Jamie Fraser since he remains the main male character through all the books?
I understand that later books may not be everyone cup of tea but I don’t understand the comments saying that they are no longer about Jamie&Claire. They always remain the core and heart of the story, only with added characters who are mostly their closest family.

I hope I live long enough to see all 8 books in the Outlander series. My only problem is the amount of time between each series….I will not live long enough if it goes on like this…..YIKES!!!

I tend to agree with previous commend. Books 5,6,7,8, are a bit “escaping” from the main characters, many new characters and stories that have no real value in the main plot, which is the story of Jamie and Claire. Book 4 is a good one for an end, if production doesn’t want to renew the show. I think that even though the show is a great success – those sort of “middle” books can be sorted in 2 books per season, because it’s a very expensive show, till Diana finishes books 9 and 10, so audiences get to watch the complete saga- if production doesn’t sort the middle books, people might get tired of the side stories and lose interest in the show, I’m not that certain that the show will be renewed though, Ron Moore and his production company, is already involved in other projects, so perhaps that’s a way of telling us there’ll be no more show.

I can’t speak for the books, but I wouldn’t read into Ron’s production company too much — most top-tier producers (see Greg Berlanti and Shonda Rhimes) are great balancing multiple things.

The books, right to book 8, were about Jamie and Claire, why would the series be any different?

I agree all the books are about Jamie and Claire adventures and their relationship together, their love and endurance while adding adventure. I disagree that viewers could lose interest, once an Outlander fan always an Outlander fan.

Books 5 and forward can really be grouped together. They are extremely long but full of fluff. 5 and 6 could be one season. 7 and 8 another season. By that time book 9 will be out and then they can figure out what to do with the finish. I don’t see much past 7 seasons.

In some respects I agree with you. Book 8 spent way too much time on the civil war and all I wanted was more of Claire, Jamie, Bree and Roger, not nearly enough about them in Book 8 but, still enjoyed it….the ending left it open for a Book 9!!!

I agree that books 5- 6 could be compressed into one season but not books 7 – 8. They are complex with various timelines and a lot of things happening to a lot of characters. But I don’t believe the series will go on for so long.
As for the civil war, I believe it was shown mostly in regard to Jamie and Claire, how it inpacted them both and what role they played through it.
