Teen Wolf season 6 trailer analysis: Who’s the real enemy here?

Teen Wolf season 6 trailer

The latest Teen Wolf season 6 trailer debuted at Comic-Con a few days ago, and as we reflect and look back at it now, one word comes to mind: Intense. Here’s another: Human.

What remains remarkable about both this trailer and the plot for the end is that despite all of the crazy, supernatural stuff that the show has brought to the table over the years, there may be one simple word to describe what the writers are planning as the biggest threat of all: Humanity. It’s not about how strong you are, your fangs, your abilities, or what makes you different. It’s the fear of the other that paralyzes you and can cause you to shake in our boots.

The timing of the trailer, or this season as a whole, should come as no surprise or coincidence. Just remember for a moment the era that this season is in — perhaps at no point in the past thirty or forty years has society been so defined based on fear and disdain for what is different. The biggest threat facing Beacon Hills now appears to be humanity, and a group who is desperate to fire off chaos and destruction upon all werewolf-kind. It is shown on the streets, and it is even shown within the school during the trailer. The latter is not a surprise; we are often products of how we grew up, especially at an early age when we don’t have that opportunity to escape and learn otherwise. If young students are being taught that wolves are evil and to hunt for them, then a-hunting they will go. Our insecurities and fears often stem from parental units.

Beyond humans, will there be other threats? Sure, as this trailer does offer up a brief glimpse of a web — a gruesome spider-monster is on the way in the early going, otherwise known as that time in which we try to watch Teen Wolf without actually opening our eyes.

In turns of quick visual frights, there are probably few who will generate a reaction quite like this spider will. Yet, in terms of one that is actually going to leave us afraid for the real world, it’s the idea of people wanting to round up groups of others, paralyzed by fear and intent on taking out those who are different. There are multiple glimpses of this in the trailer, and also major battles, familiar faces, Hellhounds, and a variety of different Beacon Hills locales. It’s a challenge for Scott and the pack — if they react violently, they reinforce a violent rhetoric. If they don’t respond at all, they run the risk of extinction.

In the end, the message of this trailer is to be afraid not of the things that go bump in the night, but rather those who scream in the day.

On a lighter note…

Remember that this final stretch of ten episodes will feature a number of familiar faces, whether it be Dylan O’Brien (who made a surprise appearance at the Comic-Con panel), Colton Haynes, or Tyler Hoechlin. This is a show looking to celebrate itself, while maybe also terrifying here and there along the way.
