Suits season 7 premiere review: The new senior partner; Louis’ closure
Oh, and apparently Harvey’s down with asking out his old therapist in Dr. Agard. Who in the bleep saw that coming? Just a few minutes later, we had another surprise: Donna deciding that she wants to be partner. She’s certainly earned it, but that doesn’t mean everyone will agree to the idea. He promised to think about, but in the process he wanted to get back in the saddle of kicking butt and taking names. The two of them took off in order to assist a new client, someone in the midst of a quick transaction who wants representation. The twist here, however, is that he’s not all that quick to trust anyone.
The two guys took part in one aspect of the “transaction,” which involved them attending a ritzy celebration with a number of women and plenty of vodka. It was basically a way to set the stage for a bidding war, one that could net their client and themselves plenty of cash. All of this was entertaining in its own way, but it gave way to some other stories that held our attention even more. Take, for example, Harvey’s interest in Dr. Agard. He claimed that he wanted to be with her, but minutes into their date, it was clear that he was just talking at her and not talking to her. His mind wandered, and Mike had to push him back into the business when it was clear that his client was trying to potentially get out of a lawsuit that could be done over an allegedly stolen recipe.
Mike and Harvey eventually found a way to work together in order to ensure that their client got what he wanted … even if it meant challenging him in the process.
Oh, and there was also pressure from Donna, but more on that in a moment.
Louis becomes unhinged
Well, this escalated quickly. Louis refused to take a break away from the firm, and made it clear that he wanted instead to focus on training his team of associates. That seemed admirable at first, but then you saw him with said associates. The moment that one of them said he wanted time off for the birth of his child, it reminded Louis of how he wasn’t going to be a father anymore with Tara out of the picture. He quickly lost. He then tore Rachel a new one, and then tore Donna a new one after that before being cruel to Rachel again.
If there is one person who could still get to Louis, it was Donna, but she didn’t have much in the way of authority or respect to do it. This is one of the reasons why she wanted to be a partner, but Harvey was dragging his feet in the process. Sure, he was burning the candle at every end, but he was not being all that courteous in getting back to her. Harvey told her that he’d name her a partner, but he did so in a way in which there wasn’t much open communication at first. It took a heated bathroom conversation for Harvey, Louis, and Donna to get on the same page and try to press onward.
The aftermath
Louis eventually decided to give the associates over to Rachel, who in turn give him some advice: Talk to Tara, and get a little bit of closure that he didn’t have previously. He called her, and we’ll see what that means.
Meanwhile, Donna’s got a new office, Mike’s still trying to fill up his, and Harvey decided to pay Dr. Agard a visit in the closing minutes. So much for that falling apart.
Final Verdict
While we wouldn’t say that the first case blew us away, the rest of the episode was some classic Suits drama — twists, turns, and forward progress for all of the characters. The show remains one of our guilty pleasures, and we don’t have to feel guilty about it at all. Grade: B+.
