Once Upon a Time season 7 episode 2: A Colin O’Donoghue showcase
In a new post on Twitter, executive producer Adam Horowitz confirmed that the title for the second episode of the season is “A Pirate’s Life.” Jerome Schwartz and Jane Espenson wrote the installment together, and that gives us all sorts of confidence that this will be an entertaining hour of TV.
We don’t think that we need to spend all that much time explaining precisely what this title means: “A Pirate’s Life” is a key quote from Pirates of the Caribbean, at least the ride more so than the feature films. If this means that we get to see Hook singing “yo ho, yo ho,” we’re all about it — though technically, we did already get a musical episode.
Over the course of this episode, one of the great things we hope to see is an opportunity to learn more about Hook’s past, but then also where he stands in the present and what some of his goals are. If Jennifer Morrison is only going to appear in the first episode as Emma Swan, where does that leave Hook? O’Donoghue is still a series regulars, and one of the biggest question marks that we have at the moment about the character is just where things are going to stand when it comes to him and his new-found wife. Why in the world would he leave her? This cannot be one of his ordinary missions, since it feels almost impossible that the writers would be able to justify that unless it was a matter of life and death, or something that would otherwise alter the course of their entire future together. Maybe there is a loose end that Hook needs to tie up, or maybe Emma is simply unable to travel to help him with whatever issue has befallen older Henry (Andrew J. West, who we will be seeing throughout the season).
With the main cast so reduced, we do imagine that O’Donoghue, Lana Parrilla, and Robert Carlyle are going to do more heavy lifting than ever this season. We’ll see if that holds, since the show cannot rush too many new characters at once.
