Doctor Who 2017 Christmas Special filming reportedly ends

Doctor Who 2017 Christmas Special

Is the Doctor Who 2017 Christmas Special done? Based on some current information that is out there, signs point to that being the case.

Thanks to some tweets (which were first uncovered by Cultbox), it appears that the wrap party has taken place for the final episode starring Peter Capaldi as The Doctor, and also the last one written and executive-produced by Steven Moffat. This is an episode with a great deal of ambiguity surrounding it, with the only thing seemingly confirmed based on the cliffhanger being the presence of David Bradley as the first Doctor, originally played by William Hartnell. There will likely be some other returns and surprises along the way, but we don’t expect many of them to be concerned. This is not a show that really needs to give anything away in advance, given that there is so much that it brings to the table and so much of that has to do with imagination and the element of surprise.

Last year’s special was somewhat whimsical, sad, and romantic at the same time; it’ll be interesting to see how Moffat handles the regeneration now, and the pain / fear that goes along with it. The Doctor may be more afraid of change than he is death; regeneration may be a fate worse than death in his mind.

With the news of the wrap party, there is of course one big question worth asking: Has the new Doctor filmed their first scene just yet? We know that new showrunner Chris Chibnall will write their scene, and it’s possible that this will be shot and added to the special after the fact. One of the things that is the most notable about the search is that the BBC has been mum on almost everything. They haven’t even shared just yet when they are going to announce the new Doctor, let alone who it will be or how they will factor into the story. There are rumors aplenty of course out there, but we don’t want to give any of them too much attention out of a fear that it could somehow intentionally lead you on.

Beyond the Christmas Special, new episodes of Doctor Who could start filming in late 2017 / early 2018. It’s really much too early to start speculating on a premiere date right now.
