Sherlock season 5: More confirmations from Steven Moffat
Well there have certainly been a lot of news articles floating around proclaiming that there is for sure going to be a Sherlock season 5 the newest bit of scoop giving us more reason to believe that it’s coming back for another go-around. According to an interview on BBC Radio 2, Steven Moffat said that he’s very optimistic about the idea of a 5th season coming up in the future, but there’s still no real details on whether or not it’s absolutely confirmed that it’s coming back. What he said was this:
“We did [the last series] a year ago, just about, and I’ve been flat-out on Doctor Who ever since. So I haven’t really thought about it.”
“Mark [Gatiss has] been doing other stuff as well, so we haven’t sat down and had a proper talk about what we would do with another series.”
“I sort of assume we will. I sort of assume we’ll come back.”
So while Moffat has said that he “sort of assumes” that they will be back to do more episodes there’s no real information on when that might be. There’s been times where we’ve had to wait years in between seasons of Sherlock and as Moffat said he’s busy on Doctor Who while Mark Gatiss (who plays our beloved Mycroft as well as is a co-creator of Sherlock) is also busy working on other stuff. It’s great that he has said that he assumes that they’ll be back to do some more episodes, but the fact that he said that he’s been completely focused on Doctor Who and hasn’t really thought about it tells us that we’re nowhere near having a season 5. So while there’s a lot to be excited about with him saying that he assumes that there’ll be another season, don’t expect it anytime soon.
For us, we only want to see Sherlock come back if they have a really good story to tell. That’s one of the great things about this show: The episodes are all a bunch of little mini movies that have a complete beginning, middle, and end and while there are some aspects that pop up throughout the series like Moriarty or Irene Adler it’s not the focus of the show. This makes it so that a viewer can jump into an episode and move on to something else when it’s done and you can do that with any of them. If they’re going to come back, we want it to be at the same quality that it’s been at and not rush to push episodes out just because people want to see a season 5. Trust us when we say that want to see a season 5 as much as the next fan, but it has to be on the same level that everything else has been and after the season 4 finale, they’ve set the bar really high – they’ve got to come back with something as great or even better.

I want to see them as the romantic couple we all know they are and always have been, even since the original ACD stories. As for a season plot – them against the world as usual, and then let it end with them retiring to the country to raise Rosie together and Sherlock tending to his bees <3

Agreed. I don’t want a season 5 just because I want more Sherlock. I only want it if the events of The Final Problem are made null and void somehow so that the whole of it makes sense. Right now if they continue with the storyline they have created, this is a world where Euros exists, Mary manipulated them from beyond the grave, and Moffat & co. never intended to make them a couple, even though everyone can see that they should be, and in fact, that is what the writers have created (unbeknownst to them, evidently).
I certainly don’t want it if both actors aren’t really into it, because not only would Season 5 be worse if they continue with events as currently written, if both actors are just phoning it is (which I highly doubt BTW), it would really ruin it.
I’m fine with leaving it as is rather than giving us more if they don’t intend to fix the problems they have created.
