Nashville season 5 episode 16 spoilers: The Gunnar – Scarlett saga continues
While we have found the post-Rayna James era of the show to be very much entertaining, we will also be one of the first to admit that there are some pretty clear flaws to what the show is bringing in terms of tone. Whether it be Maddie’s arrest, Juliette stealing music originally meant for Maddie, or Scarlett’s baby drama, there’s a whole lot of depressing stuff on the show. Add to this all of the sad stuff going on with Deacon and his entire family mourning Rayna, and you’ve got the overall setup for what is a fairly dark season of the show.
In the preview below, alas things aren’t getting a whole lot better for Gunnar or Scarlett, as the entire pregnancy situation is going to become public consumption, which is not the sort of thing anyone wants. For some odd reason, much of the public has this odd / gross perception that celebrities owe them something such as every little bit of their privacy. Therefore, when something like a pregnancy or some other personal development unfolds, they want all of the tea and all of the details. That will put a strain on Gunnar and Scarlett, and they’ll have some more waters that they will try to navigate. There is also Damien floating around out there…
Will all of this make for compelling television? Maybe. The two biggest things that we want for these two are to dive into some conflicts that are a little more tied to the music industry, and then from there also do some more great stuff when it comes to getting them more involved with some of the other characters. As of late, one of the biggest ways that the show has done that is through Deacon being a beacon of advice and conversation for the characters — but, unfortunately, that’s about it. We’ll see if that changes when tonight’s new episode airs.
