Riverdale season 2 spoilers: Molly Ringwald returning as Archie’s mom

Molly Ringwald

For those of you who love nostalgia mixed in with your Riverdale, it’s time to get excited — Molly Ringwald will be back for season 2 of the CW show!

In a new post on Twitter, Archie Comics themselves confirmed that the 80’s movie icon will be coming back in the role of Mary Andrews, which she first played for a few episodes during the show’s first season. As someone who grew up in the 80’s, seeing Molly Ringwald in this role is a total thrill for us, so news of her return gets us right in the feels.

There are certainly plenty of reasons why you should be excited to see more of Molly on the show, starting with the fact that her character could end up being part of a love triangle with her estranged husband Fred Andrews. Hermione Lodge and Fred shared a kiss during season one, and while Mary seemed mostly fine with it (what is she really going to say, she’s not with Fred anymore), there’s still tension between these two women. Throw in the fact that Hermione is business partners with Fred and it’s going to become even murkier.

When Mary was last on the show she was trying to encourage Archie to move with her to Chicago; however, he declined the offer, saying that his friends at home needed him and he was happier to remain there. He did make it clear at the time that he planned to visit her during the summer. Probably a good move since the summer before he stayed with his father and ended up sleeping with his teacher Ms. Grundy.

Is it possible that we’ll be seeing Archie head to the Windy City, or is Mary finding her way back to Riverdale for a visit? We do have to say that the latter is the option with the meatier story, mostly due to the fact that there is so much juicy drama that can come out of getting a chance to have her back in the town right when things are already starting to get a little chaotic. Given that the first season set up Fred, Mary, Hermione and soon Hiram Lodge – well let’s just say the parents are going to have as much drama going down as the kids.

Riverdale season 2 started production last week, and it will be premiering this fall on a new night and time Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time. This is not the only big news that we’ve received when it comes to Riverdale and parents, as Mark Consuelos is going to be coming aboard in the role of Veronica’s father for much of the season. As we said – parent drama is ahead.
