Arrow season 6: a tribute to Katie Cassidy’s Black Canary
In what is yet another reminder that characters within this world are never forgotten even after their death, there will be another tribute to Earth-1 Lauren Lance on the show. Executive producer Marc Guggenheim was the first to share this image, and while it may be rather simple in terms of its style, there is clearly still a great deal of substance and meaning with the image here. It’s a reminder of how she is missed, and how Oliver Queen will keep the legacy of Laurel close to his heart as the show pushes further and further along.
What will complicate things further for Oliver is the reality that Black Siren will be around, presumably, in a more consistent manner than ever before. Katie Cassidy is going from being a one of the shining lights of the show to one of the purveyors of evil; that may be fun for her to play, but for Oliver, it must be rather traumatic to see someone causing pain who looks identical to a woman he once loved. Luckily, this is a man who, over time, has absolutely learned to compartmentalize. He’s had to, given that if that was something he struggled with, odds are that he would have gone insane. This is the sort of world that will easily chew someone up and spit them out without a whole lot of serious thought about it.
There will be another Black Canary still roaming around Star City in the form of Dinah Drake, who took on the title last season — provided of course that she does survive. As reported yesterday, Guggenheim seems to not want people to think that either Dinah or Wild Dog is safe just because Juliana Harkavy and Rick Gonzalez were given series-regular promotions. There are still opportunities for things to go a little bit haywire with them.
One way or another, so long as the Black Canary spirit is kept alive, that’s enough to have a smile on our face — we just imagine that we’ll keep missing Laurel for a rather long time to come. (Photo: The CW.)
