Star Trek: Discovery premiere date finally revealed over at CBS All Access
CBS confirmed this morning that the long-awaited continuation of the franchise starring Sonequa Martin-Green (The Walking Dead) will premiere on Sunday, September 24 at 8:30 p.m. Eastern time following presumably NFL football. This first episode will air both linearly on CBS and then on the All Access subscription service; future episodes of the show will be made available exclusive through All Access.
While there may not be much of a natural crossover between Star Trek and Big Brother, the reason that the timing of this premiere makes sense is tied back to how All Access subscriptions. People who choose to subscribe to the serve will do so under a monthly model, and with that, there may be many people who are still waiting for the subscription to expire at the time that Star Trek: Discovery premieres. Maybe some of them decide to watch the first episode, become hooked, and then cancel the subscription down the road.
Here’s the bad news for CBS with that: The Big Brother diehards probably bought their live feeds today or yesterday thanks to the preseason interviews, and their subscriptions will no longer be active by the time Discovery premieres.
In the end, this is still a super-wise decision from CBS to air this show at this time, right before the start of their fall season. The full 15-episode season 1 is going to air similarly to The Walking Dead in how there will be a batch of episodes in the fall, and then another batch in the new year following the hiatus. That further ensures that viewers who have All Access will stay subscribed to it a little bit longer. This is a huge gamble for the network to take, so we’ll just have to see if it pays off. This show is probably a pricey one, after all!
