American Gods finale reaction: On cliffhanger, season 2 trouble, more
Ultimately, we’ve learned now that a big part of the ending had to do with something rather surprising in the show’s own budget. Speaking per Entertainment Weekly in a panel discussion, show executive producers Bryan Fuller and Michael Green noted that they had gone over for the first eight episodes, and ultimately they had to figure out a way to make the eighth episode work as a finale. With that, they decided to include the reveal about Mr. Wednesday being Odin, something that they had originally intended in include in episode 4. The big reason why they decided to wait on that was to not offer up a disservice to Shadow Moon and his own journey. Having him learn this may offer him some more perspective now going into the second season of the show.
In speaking about season 2, Fuller noted that “you should be very worried for Shadow Moon,” which does make some sense given where he is right now. He’s always been a man haunted by various demons, and he’s now got the presence of these gods hanging over him while at the same time also dealing with Laura Moon and some of the revelations that she is going to be leaving at his doorstep soon. All of this should make for an eventful second season; hopefully, in the process we’ll see a little bit more of some of these characters than we did this time! We’re thinking especially of the likes of Easter and Media based on how little screen time that they had.
Alas, now the long waiting begins. It’s too early to know when the show will return, but we imagine that this rather large, rather eclectic cast is going to be back for some more adventures, surprises, and of course crazy stuff before long. We’re excited to dive into it once more!

IMO, I would have ended the episode at Laura’s entrance, saying that she wanted to talk to her husband. It’s been a strange season. Still waiting for the punch line.
